Doctors Who Prescribe Methadone

Updated

I am addicted to strong pain meds and I am tired of having to come off of them, the withdrawal is awful. I went to a urgent care doc and was prescribed suboxone. I take anxiety meds too but he wants me to stop. I really need the anxiety meds but he wants me off them. How do I get him to change it from suboxone to methadone so I can take my anxiety meds?

Legally, he can't. To get Methadone for addiction treatment in the U.S. requires that you go to an actual Methadone treating clinic, private doctors aren't allowed to prescribe it for addiction treatment.

What anxiety medication do you take? Did he say why he wants you to stop taking it?

Private doctors are treating patients with methadone. They have to have a DEA number. Most doctors that prescribe it are writing it for pain. If they prescribe it for addiction then different rules apply, he has to be an addiction specialist but you do not have to go in for daily dosing.

Yes Susan. I had been taking Methadone for Peripheral Neuropathy pain for 8 years with pretty good success. I've had the Neuropathy for 18 years and have gone thru all the trials of meds I could stand. None of them worked. Until Methadone !!
It relieves enough of my pain that I can function pretty well. Much better than when I was taking other narcotic meds or anti-depressants that most doctors will insist on giving U. Those doctors do not know enough about Neuropathy to treat us. Run away from them & find an Anesthesiologist. Most of them have the correct license to write the script that U need.
Nothing else has worked on me. However, I'm finding that in New Jersey, most of the qualified doctors who can prescribe the Methadone for me are not willing to anymore because of sanctions demanded by the DEA lately. I'm not sure what they are, but I feel it's extremely unfair to pain patients who need it for relief.

If U can find a good anesthesiologist who is willing to write U the script, do go to them fast !! U will get relief.
If U know of any in central N.J. please forward who it is, so I can go too !! I have been on a wild goose chase for the last 6 months.
Because of these DEA fears, I have lost my last 2 doctors. Currently I am without meds and suffering like Hell.
I wish U all the luck & success in finding the right doctor to treat U. It will work !!

America the great ! You can buy a gun anywhere with piece of I.D (fake or not) but you can't get methadone without a fight.

NO doctor willl let you take methadone and benzos and doctors cant perscribe methadone as a addiction only for pain you will have to go to a methadone clinic for that but they will expect you to stop the benzos they will tell your doctor to put u on a taper

yes you can be prescribed both as long as your not on a high dosage and aren't abusing,a doctor will prescribe both because just because they give you something to take away or help with pain doesn't mean anxiety goes away.

I know for a FACT that a doctor can not by law percribe methadone as a percription for addiction the pills are completly different than the liquid they give to addicts. Hence why the doctor at urgent care gave you suboxone which is a opiod blocker thats why you had to bge "dope sick" the first dose yoiu took. If you find any doctor to give you pills for addiction and benzod to boot ill give you 1000 bucks to tell me where he is cause i want to go there!!!!

chad I don't know if I misunderstood you but I do know a medical Dr. can prescribe methadone for pain if he has a DEA#. He should not be writing for addiction unless he's an addiction specialist, both will be in pill form. Clinics do it fo pain & addiction. It's liquid form so they can watch you drink it. Valium isn't a benzo as long as your Dr. prescribes it you can take it with suboxen. Dr. and pharmacies all tap into together so the both know what you're taking. Do not take subox too soon, you will have acute withdrawels.

Buddy I been on methadone for 13 years and I know for a fact doctors are backing away from prescribing benzos (Xanax, Valium, & other anxiety meds) with methadone because the mixture is very dangerous & there's been an epidemic of overdoses from mixing methadone & narcotic anxiety pills. It'll be much easier to get anxiety meds with suboxon. Good luck

That is so very true, jon !!
I've been being treated for pain for the last 8 years with Methadone. Lost my doctor, and when I tried to find a new one, I had a Hell of a hard time. Most assumed I was an addict and refused to treat me. Left me in pain for several months, until I finally got into a hospital based pain management program, which I am in now. Thank God !! And thank God the doctor I got understands what is happening today too. It gets him angry also. My only complaint about him, is that he has to keep insisting I try the installation of an electrical device I am 100% against. I feel there are too many risks, it isn't totally helpful for all pain patients, and I just don't want to be cut open for a trial, that probably will not help me. Why should I...when a pill helps ? It's so much easier on me this way.
He understands, but every month I hear the same thing. Sheesh !!

It really pisses me off that U can go out & get a gun easier than get your meds if your on Methadone for pain.
I was offered every other kind of narcotic for my pain, but I well knew they would not work.
Got plenty of Morphine, Nucynta, Percocet, etc..Even offered me some Dilaudid. They don't help me and I didn't want them. What they basically told me, was to use them & shut up about my pain. The jerks !! They put me thru HELL !! (including my Primary)
I guess if I was an addict, I would've been a very happy girl !! NOT....NOT an addict !! Helloooooooo.

Geez...I didn't even get a slight "high" when trying to use those other drugs, tho I'm sure many would have.

Thanks jon.

Hi I have had a total hip replacement and have other issues with chronic pain. I was traveling 6-8 hors one way to see my doc. I can no longer drive that far as my prothesis has been recalled and is becoming very painful to say the least. I have been on methadone for 18 years and would like to find a doc closer to home. I live in KY on the TN VA line. If you could help me find another doc I would be so grateful. I have read many posts on here about people's need for pain management and it breks my heart. My phone # is 606{edited for privacy}. If you could just give me a call and let me know the docs name and address you wouold be helping me immensley.

Susan, If U have Neuropathy and go to the correct pain management doctor, they should be able to write U s script for the Methadone to see if it's a good medication for U. It works for me, as well as some others I know of.
Good luck wherever your at by now.

My best advice to U is to find one of your local hospitals and ask if they can take U into their pain management program. Most hospitals have one. They will explain their process to U. Then it turns into a matter of waiting to be called in & evaluated.
I suffered while I was waiting, was had no trouble when they finally did call me back. Start preparing your records to bring in with U now. Get a rundown of all your scripts for the past year or more from your pharmacy. Mine printed mine up right away. Like in 10 minutes. The doctors like this, so do it for them. They will need proof that you've been taking the meds like U say U have. Without any proof, U will get nothing.
Good luck !!

Hopes for the best !!

That’s good to hear because after years of taking it gets into your bones and is probably one of the worst withdrawals anybody could ever go through. Just be careful and you are okay now. Glad you didn’t suffer a long time because sometimes it takes months depending on your dose of methadone before you start feeling better and it takes two years for you to start sleeping like you were since it was only short term taking it. 160 mg is a pretty high dose for methadone at a clinic. I think your body was telling you something when you weren’t feeling good from taking it. I get scared to death sometimes and I’ve been going to a pain management doctor for over 10 years now, and I was only getting Methadone at first, and then he put me on high a high dose of oxycodone because of a really bad car accident I was in, but I never asked for it and now I regret ever taking one oxycodone. You know how doctors are. They're the biggest drug dealers out there and a lot of them are on at their practice making people suffer who need medication no matter what the medication is! Glad you’re feeling better. God Bless and best of luck!

And I just wanted to add, it is very hard to get any benzos while you are on methadone. It is a deadly combination, benzodiazepine and methadone combined. Suboxone is much safer if you want to take your anxiety medication, but it’s very hard to get both methadone and benzos at the same time.

Can I please tell you something? I’ve been getting prescribed methadone along with oxycodone, and you might want to do some research, because Suboxone is nothing —and I mean nothing— like methadone. Suboxone is used to get off opioids. Methadone, nowadays, is used to treat heroin addiction, along with fentanyl, which some states have as a substitute for heroin. It kills many, many people. But I just wanted to say, methadone is a very strong, long-lasting pain medicine that was made back in the '50s. I don’t want to say by whom, but it's the worst person in American history, and his name begins with an "H". His scientists created that for people in the war so they could fight longer, and he was also taking it. But back to the point—you might want to try to stay on Suboxone, or try to get Subutex instead of Suboxone or methadone, because I have been on methadone for many years, and it is very hard to get off of, probably more than any other drug in the world. It’s a very long withdrawal. I’m sure you know if you have taken it before. But don’t compare that to Suboxone because they’re nothing alike. Only pain management doctors can write prescriptions for methadone in my state. Primary care physicians used to write it for me, but now pharmacists will not fill it if it’s not from a certified pain management doctor. I just wanted to tell you, they are not alike in any form. You might want to try Subutex and see if they will write that for you because that doesn’t have the same ingredient as Suboxone. I just wanted to let you know they are nothing alike. Just do your research and use Google, and you’ll get every answer that you’re looking for. Good luck.

I went to the methadone clinic for 2 yrs. I got up to 160mg per day. It started making me sick so I tried a week at home and ending up going into a week of detox at Eagles crest. The nurse who prescribed my meds had to research how to get me from methadone to suboxone. It was a hard week, but by Thursday I was feeling much better.

Re: Felisha (# 414) Expand Referenced Message

If you do the Step down, withdraw properly, you won't even feel methadone withdrawal. I came off after 18 years on methadone at 190 mg. It took me 2 years to step down but I never felt withdrawal at all. All the people who doubt this misconception need to stop just because they try to jump off. At a high-dose doesn't mean that the rest of the world is morons too. And towting suboxone is a miracle drug is just stupid if you think it's a miracle drug I relapsed after 3 years off of methadone and I went on suboxone after 6 months taking it stay and clean, I ended up in the hospital for 5 days in a few states. Not knowing who I was or who anyone else was. And thankfully, the doctor knew it was the suboxone causing it. It took 5 days after stopping for me to recover. 18 years on methadone. No problem 6 months on subs. And I lost who I was for 5 days. I have never felt worse than any other medication than suboxone. It never rid me of my cravings it only got rid of the withdrawal. I constantly was thinking about my next dose of sub, and they had me up to 4 -12mg a day. I even tried sublocade shot. No relief from cravings. If I'm in recovery, I don't want to constantly think about the drug. I'm recovering from and if you can't get rid of my cravings then obviously, your drug isn't working. They both have their ups and Downs. But methadone has been around for many, many more years. And there's been a lot more research on it. Subs were created to make a book in the painkiller market. Until they realized it didn't work very well as a painkiller. If you don't believe me, there is a documentary all about the creation of subs. After the formula was perfected and approved 16 people from the office that created it went and checked into a hotel together, and each of them had 5 to 10 subs, and they basically went and got high. This is the medication that is a miracle cure for addiction. But it was created to get people high. Methadone was created to relieve trauma pain. If I had been thinking clearly I would have never done the switch to subs. I would have stayed with what has been researched and been around forever. I was cleaned for 18 years. I was able to step down off of it. I never felt anywhere at all and I only relapsed after I had been off of it for a few years. I'm currently back on it and I will stay on it for the rest of my life just so I can remain clean. I'm taking 160 mg this time. I'm at a new greater clinic than any other I've been to. This clinic gives you 6 takehomes after 28 days clean or not. As long as you see your counselor twice and then once a month. And you show a real desire to change. You will get your 6 take homes after 28 days of dosing.

If anyone is interested in the name of the clinic I go to and it's location, and you are in either greater, DEL MarVa or southern Pennsylvania, they still do 6 take homes after 28 days. You go up to thirteen takehomes after two clean U/A's. The maximum I believe for our clinic is twenty eight. Maybe 29. {edited for privacy}

Methadone is terrible and from experience they won’t allow you to do benzos with the methadone either for fear of heart failure. But! If you really wanna try, go to a methadone clinic, strictly a methadone clinic and tell them you want to start methadone and the counselors there will get you transferred and onto the methadone from SUBOXON.

Try SUBOXON. I was on strong strong strong pain Meds for 3 years, breakfast lunch and diner! I went to methadone when I wanted to quit- WORST MISTAKE EVER! Do not EVER use methadon, THE COME DOWN/ WITHDRAWAL IS SO MUCH WORSE and can last for months, NO JOKE! Mine lasted for almost 2 months! But then I got on SUBOXON! AND IT SAVED MY F****** LIFE! It makes you feel normal again, like before you took that first pill. It takes the craving away completely, NO WITHDRAWAL, no kicking, none of the terrible stuff you dread and someone how totally takes the thought that you need pills away idk how to explain it. Best part, if for some reason you don’t have any or miss a day or two or decide to quit, headache and nausea is THE WORST OF THE WITHDRAWAL- for me anyways. I’ve been taking it now for 2 YEARS AND IVE NEVER LOOKED BACK! It’s a godsend
