Naltrexone And Kratom

Updated

I've been taking approximately 6g of kratom every 4 to 6 hours for about 2 years now. I want to use a weight loss medication which contains naltrexone but wonder if it will cause withdrawal sickness because of my kratom use?

Hi, I am in the same boat as you. Have not been using Kratom that long (about 6 months) but want to start Contrave for weight loss. I am also hoping the naltrexone will help me not use the Kratom anymore as I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to quit for a few weeks now. I think it will help with that but my concern now is that I will go into extreme withdrawals when I take the first dose. Did you end up taking yours?

Personally, I think it would be best to consult a doctor for the purpose of setting up a tapering schedule with kratom in order to lessen any risk of a possible drug interaction during the transition to Naltrexone.

I was researching kratom's half life just to try and get a ball park figure of its excretion rate, but apparently kratom's half life differs depending on which strain of kratom you take. For example: Green vein strains reportedly have the longest half life of about 8 hours, whilst Red vein strains are said to last an estimated 4.5 to 6 hours and White vein strains around 4 hours.

Other characteristic traits of kratom that allegedly affect half life (and how long it may take to leave your body) may also be determined by their alkaloid profile and leaf density.

Having said this, I feel that a lab analysis of your specific kratom strain/variation is pertinent to receiving the most accurate answer on half life.

However, the doctor who is prescribing you Naltrexone should still be able to help you taper off kratom (more easily) to avoid serious withdrawals, provided that they have an understanding of kratom's duration of effect.

I replied earlier saying that I was in your same boat. I ended up taking my first dose of the Contrave the next day (had not used Kratom in about 24 hours prior to my first dose.) I did get very nauseous and vomited both the first day I took the medicine and the second. Many people report this as side effects in the beginning so I don't think it had anything to do with Kratom withdrawals. Your Kratom usage and dosage was longer and higher than mine so YMMV.

By the way, I have been on the medication for a week now and the side effects are no longer present.

YES IT ABSOLUTELY WILL CAUSE HORRIBLE WITHDRAWALS!!!! I experienced this first hand last summer trying to stupidly rapidly detox myself from kratom at home. I only took half of a naltrexone and it threw me into some of the worst withdrawals I have ever had that lasted for DAYS. I wanted to die. I could barely move from my bed to the bathroom. Horrible diarrhea. No sleep for three days. Intense opiate withdrawal symptoms (skin crawling, sweating, chills, nausea). Please don't do it. You will regret it. That was one of the dumbest things I ever did.

Would this be the same going from Kratom to a low dose Butrans patch?

I took my first dose of Contrave this morning and my dose of Kratom also. OMG don't do it! I am having horrible withdrawals, Sweaty and chills at the same time, I feel absolutely awful!!! I am wondering when it will end. I will not take that again!!

Omg, I just did the same thing as you--use kratom daily and started 1 dose of contrave. I went into horrible withdrawals and went to the ER last night. I tried to explain that the 2 drugs interacted badly, but unfortunately since kratom isn't fda approved the doctors had no idea what was going on. Anyway no one should ever start contrave with kratom still in their system unleass you want to feel like you're dying.

I am currently taking naltraxone so I could stop taking Kratom. I was heavily addicted to Kratom for over 2 years. I have 5 months clean today and considering quitting naltraxone. Kratom will have no effect while taking Naltraxone.

How long after getting vivitrol can you feel the effects of Kratom??

If you take Kratom, DO NOT take contrave at the same time. Especially if you have been taking Kratom for an extended amount of time. I have been on Kratom daily (heavily) and tried contrave for the first time yesterday. I am just NOW feeling halfway normal. Within an hour of taking the pills, I had full blown withdrawals that made me feel like I was dying. DONT DO IT!!!

How are you sure Kratom has no effect? Do you have a study to cite? I have been searching for something concrete not so anecdotal or subjective

Don’t take Contrave if you have been taking Kratom. I would recommend coming off Kratom and being 2 weeks without it before taking Contrave. It will put you into withdrawals (bad withdrawals) within one hour of taking the first pill. I don’t know what I was thinking, but I just spent the last 24 hours in hell.

Did they do anything for you at the hospital? My fiancé took one of my contrave thinking they were headache meds, took his Kratom and is going through horrible “withdrawal” like symptoms but he says a million times worse than he’s experienced.

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!! my wife handed me "a pill to calm me for sleep", turns out it was straight up 50mg Naltrexone. I THOUGHT I WAS DYING, I ended up in the ER on 24 hr injectable Ativan....Dude I was on a two year twice a day 6-8gm Kratom dose. I elected to never touch the stuff again after this. I also came back positive in the drug screen for opioids, and i swear all i had taken was Kratom. What a wake up call.

My frined used it as painkillers, his pain was completely gone and it boost up his energy levels. Honestly he never used it before. Kratom is said to be addictive. Like the other opioid drugs, it has the stimulant properties at lower doses and sedative effects at the higher doses.

Re: regret1 (# 14) Expand Referenced Message

OMG, it never has made me test positive for opioids and I am tested every month. I use it maybe a week each month with suboxone, and never get sick from it- the kratom helps with pain caused by my cancer. Of course anything can be addictive if abused.

Naltrexone: It acts as an opioid antagonist. Naltrexone works to block the effects of opioids. It is neither sedative nor addictive. Kratom acts as a stimulant and in high doses, it works as a sedative. The pain killer properties of the drug are also due to its interaction with the opioid receptors in the brain. The metabolization of Naltrexone takes place in the liver so there are high chances of hepatic toxicity. Therefore, the doses must be reduced if a person has some hepatic problem.

Re: Sage (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

Thank you so much for this. I read you can’t take naltrexone within 10 days of having taken opioids. I know kratom is not an opioid but since it has an opioid affect was concerned about this. My Dr knows I take Kratom and said nothing about it. I wasn’t sure what I should do but I think your post makes it clear now. I’ve been trying to wean off kratom but have not been successful. Still needing 1 tsp twice a day and having restlessness.

I use Kratom regularly for pain and to help combat alcoholism. I was prescribed naltrexone to help with cravings for alcohol. I was going to work after taking my morning dose of Kratom and thought I should try naltrexone. I was driving and became violently ill. The exit before my work happens to be a hospital and I couldn’t stop vomiting and felt like I was withdrawing from opioids. I feel really s****y still. They need to tell you at the pharmacy that if you are taking any kind of medication that could interact (cold medicine, or Immodium...etc) I have never felt so bad. I want people to know to be careful.

Ok but that was because of the interaction between the naltrexone and the Kratom, that doesn’t mean Kratom is dangerous.

Re: Chris (# 21) Expand Referenced Message

The medical field is very uneducated on the dangers of Kratom. and so was I. I had been taking it for about a year for energy. When I was prescribed naltrexone, I became deathly ill. I have been sick for nine days. Thankfully I am off Kratom but it is not the way I would have chose to do it. I will never touch the stuff again.

Do not take Naltrexone while on Kratom!!! I learned a very hard lesson, and it was the most terrifying experience of my life. I spent five hours in urgent care.

Re: Marjorieson (# 32) Expand Referenced Message

Sure if you take 50 mg, I think it’s a low-dose in that medication. I take low-dose naltrexone and I take oxycodone all day. My LDN dose is only 0.5 mg, I take it first thing in the morning and then I wait a couple hours before I take the first oxycodone. I take my last oxycodone at 8 PM so there are like 10 hours between that and the low-dose naltrexone, it works out fine for me.

Re: DefinitelyGlen5 (# 11) Expand Referenced Message

Doc at University of Florida has the most publicized research on Kratom. Can’t remember his name but there is a video where he is interviewed about his research. At some point in 2016 they took his supply of kratom away because of federal laws. I think he got the accreditation and funding back since then. He said it’s one of the most important pain management research to date.

Re: Jojo (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

From studies at University of Florida ( best known kratom research doc, forgot name) kratom uses delta , mu-opioid receptors. Narcan blocks mu-opioid receptors which block pain. The delta receptors deal with depression
