Nitrofur Mac Side Effects For 65and Older (Top voted first)

why are people over 65 not advised to use Nitrofur Mac? I have taken it for several years for UTI which I get when I do not take the medication. Is there some other antibiotic that can be prescribed in place of it? I am 82

My father is 85 and has suffered with bladder cancer for 10 years, therefore he has many UTIs, This past fall he also had a pacemaker put in. Now with this new UTI the doctor gave him Nitrofur Mac for the first time. After taking it for a day and a half his calf has swollen up and his knees ache. Is this caused form the medication?

The reason Nitrofurantoin is now being used far more cautiously, if at ll, in the elderly, is due to the fact that they are much more prone to experience the side effects and severe complications from it.

I took a 7 day dose of this Nitrofur-Macr 100mg and after a couple of doses I had cramps in my feet that made me drop to the floor. I was having aches and pain but contributed that to a computer project that I was working on and sitting much longer then usual. After the last dose, I got out of bed and had severe joint pain. I am over 65. I will discuss this with my Doctor and never take this medication again.
