I am taking this medication for a UTI. I have been on it for a day and a half. This morning I was suddenly wakened by a loud sound in my ears (sounded like birds chirping), and a stinging pain across my face, down my spine into my arms and legs - worse on my left side than on my right. I sat up and walked around and it finally subsided, although it was hard to walk at first. It felt like my muscles didn't want to respond. I laid back down, as I was very tired, and in about a half hour it happened again, only worse. I am now up and looking for answers. Could this be from the nitrofurantoin? ## Hi, Sally! I am going in for a uterus treatment and the doctor had me take a urine culture 7 days prior. Twice, the culture came back as positive and the doctor postponed the uterus treatment. I had no symptoms of the UTI. He then prescribed Nitrofurantoin 100mg once a day for a month prior to the next appointment for the procedure. Is this the right antibiotic for my situation? The dosage? Anything else I might add to rectify the positive result of the culture? ## It is appropriate and the best choice of drug. I am also on this drug everyday in the same dose of 100 mg. My Neurologist prescribed Nitrofurantoin Mono-MCR 100mg for the rest of my life ## Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic usually used in treating urinary tract infections and also against E. Coli. I'm not sure what relation an antibiotic would have to nerve problems, but there are other natural antibiotics in the form of fruits, vegetables, herbs, oils, etc; that in my opinion can be a more feasible long term approach to killing bacteria. After taking this medication for three days, I did not experience any side effects except for intense headaches right after taking it. On the fourth day I woke up with extreme shortness of breath, feeling of heaviness in my chest, chills, and joint pain. I have never had this sort of reaction to an antibiotic before, or any sort of medicine for that matter, so I thought I might have the flu. I went to the doctor and tested negative for the flu and he said I may have been suffering from really bad allergies. I forgot to take both of the antibiotic pills that day and woke up the next morning feeling better. I have been taking Nitrofurantoin 100mg, one per day for 2 months. Since taking it have had bad headaches, lightheadedness, nausea and my blood pressure keeps going low. Can the Nitrofurantoin cause bp to go low and also once the Nitrofuantoin has been stopped, how long before the side effects disappear ? ## I take notification mono/mac 100mg and my blood pressure is elevated ## There is no effect on blood pressure listed among the side effects reported by the FDA, though there is no way to be sure how nay given medication will affect any certain person that takes it. How does it take to leave my system entirely after I have taken my last pill ## Nitrofurantoin's Half-life is about 20 minutes. However this time is increased in those with renal impairment. The time it takes to completely leave your system is varied for each individual, however most Antibiotics can stay in your system for a few days after you stop taking them. My doctor (OBG) gave me nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals (100 caps) for a UTI. 3 days after completing my dose I got an allergic reaction with hives, etc. I went to my MP Dr. and she said I may be allergic to sulfur, but my OBG just told me there is no sulfur in this antibiotic. My doctor prescribed me 100mg 4x a day nitrofurantoin for 3 days. I finished taking them but my diarrhea didn't stop. And I have really bad acid reflux (rumbling of the tummy) how long will this medication last in my body? I finished drinking the meds last thursday at 3am, its now saturday here in my countrt. My doctor told me that Cipro or Bactim are very good for treating UTIs caused by E-Coli, but that Nitrofurantoin Mono_MCR is better than the other two for treating UTIs caused by staph infection. I am 76 years old. I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin 50 MG twice a day for a UTI. On the 11th day I developed a red rash all over my legs, huge hives everywhere which itched incessantly, swelling of face and lips and extreme fatigue. Hello! I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for a UTI and I’m on my third day of taking it. My UTI symptoms seem to be gone however I’ve developed some pretty instense vaginal itching. Is the itching related to the antibiotic or did I get super lucky and develop a yeast infection or something? No discharge or rash just itching. If the itching IS a side effect of the antibiotic should I call my doctor to discontinue it or is it not a huge deal as long as I can handle it? I took my second to last dosage last night, about 4 hours later I was sick and am hoping it’s not interfered in anyway, I still feel a little bit of the uti symptoms after taking my last tablet 4 hours ago (they’re less intense but still there). I’m hoping it will still get rid of the infection as it took 3 weeks to get any antibiotics that actually touched it. ## No, you should have digested and used the medication, after 4 hours, so it should not create a problem. I recently was treated for a UTI with 100mg of Nitrofurantoin twice a day for 10 days. 11/23/16 through 12/3/16. On 12/6/16, I developed terrible heartburn along with a weird heat/tingly/itching sensation on the palms of my hands and fingers, arches of my feet, eyes, back of scalp. The itching has gotten worse (it is now 12/10/16), and I'm still having problems with the heartburn. I was seen by a doctor for the heartburn on 12/7/16, and he gave me a GI cocktail to relieve the pain, which was basically a band-aid for a couple of hours.
