My gosh, how long have you had 8 disc dislocations? Are you severely disabled? I've been off hydro 7.5 3x day since May 2013. On them I was able to work as the PILLS masked my condition. I worked really great on them too! Ha, ha. I had an injury in 09 to my neck. On Aug 6 coming up, I'm having 3 level ACDF Neck Surgery. Without the pills, I've been able to make better health care choices based on the science of my skeleton and research on how pain in the body works. Pills can't fix that. Is what it is. I'm sure you've had to modify your life a ton! I know I'm mobility disabled. Gosh, what a situation for you! Currently I take 500mg Tylenol WITH 50 mg Tramadol 3x day, 4mg Tizanidine 2 xday, 40mg Citaopram 1x day. Yes, I need rx now pre surgery but just since June 2015. I wish you much needed help! I hope my post is encouraging.

Methadone and MSContin for 13 years in Florida, and now can't get a prescription filled anywhere. Started after 3 failed back surgeries. Taking methadone since 2001, doc pulled everyone back 2 years ago, and cut me to 40 mg per day, then added 1 mscontin 60mg per day to make up for it. It was fine until Walgreen's cut me off the same day my doc changed the script. Found a pharmacy willing to fill them, not easy even 2 years ago, but they don't take insurance, and they charge five times what Walgreen's does. I hunted around for a long time for a pharmacy that took my insurance, and would take a new patient. Found one, then two months later he tells me he can't take my doctor's scripts anymore. I went back to the last place, but he was no longer able to get me in. 18 pharmacies in 2 days, and 60 bucks in gas, and no pills for me. I actually had cut down in anticipation, and I feel like that saved me. I feel crappy, but nothing like when I kicked Hydrocodone. That was the worst. Coming off of methadone has been kind of like slow motion withdrawls. Hot flashes. Sneezing fits. No rolling around on the floor, wishing the pill fairy would come. I have been mentally detached from my pills for a long time, so I feel ready to quit. The pain isn't as bad as I feared. I keep waiting for the really bad part to come. It has spared me the worst. I am mentally prepared to do a year of misery. I don't think that it will be that bad. My mental addiction may be cured, from years of not getting high on my meds, which was the single best thing about methadone. When I was on OC 80's, I was constantly running short. But now I am ready, finally, to try to step away from the meds, simply because they have become too expensive and such a pain to procure. My pain is there, and it is indeed much worse than when I'm on my meds, but I think that once my brain starts producing opiates again, I'll be fine. I'm no longer terrified of stopping them. I was terrified a few months ago. Not now. Deep Steel runs through my veins. I hope than any of you who need to quit can feel some inspiration here. The moral of this story.... I came to a place in my life where I am ready to tackle the largest problem in my inventory, and it happened naturally. I am not the man I used to be. I have grown. But I will say it took this crisis of not being able to get the medication to bring to this place. If I was still being handed them, I would still be taking them. Nuff said. Good luck to any of you in my position.

I would urge you to never tell a pm doctor that you need meds and your in withdrawl . They will most likely not give you anything but a referral to rehab . Talk to them calmly listen to there suggestions openly . And sometimes be grateful you just got something . I also would not mention anything about the flordia clinics to a new doc. And its never a bad idea to try to start decreasing the your dose. Its proven that after taking opiates regularly over amount of time can make you more sensitive to pain when you get off of them and this can last a year or more. Ypur best bet is to accept what they suggest and do it for a month give it time even if its not enough. Make another appt. And then tell him that its not effective and give valid reasons . They are about 90% more likely to do more for you then.

Hey I'm a veteran and the VA sucks I've been on 30mg for 3 years and now they have removed that medicine from VA. Where can I go to pay cash for dr visit and prescription, because if it's not from the VA I have to pay for it, have no insurance.

Hi Taryn,

Unfortunately, no one can know ahead of time what a doctor is or is not willing to prescribe, as that is based on the doctor's discretion and not solely on someone else's previous appointment.

Some advice I can give you though, is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication' when you see a new doctor. Make sure to transfer or take a copy of all your medical records with you (which you already know to do). Then, the best approach in my honest opinion is to discuss up front and honestly what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. Most doctors will take it under consideration and hear you out if you approach them in this manner. I only say this because a lot of people don't get the medication they need because they are approaching the doctor in such a needy way that they are being viewed as addicts and not patients. So as awkward as that may seem, it is something to consider...

In regards to finding a local pain doctor, I have listed below a couple websites specific to locating pain management doctors in a given area. All you have to do is input your city or zip code for narrowed results:
{link removed because site no longer exists}

You can give this other page a try too if you come up with different results for some reason or another:
wellness.com/find/pain%20management%20specialist

Many of the results you find (in one or both of the links above) also list a phone number for that specific doctor; I'd consider calling up a number of them to see if they are accepting new patients; some aren't, but most usually are.

Also, if you're looking to save some money on your prescriptions, this site does offer a "Free Prescription Drug Discount Card", which could save you anywhere from 10-75% off your rx. While this is not intended to be a substitute for insurance, I think anything is better than nothing if you need the help.

You can take a look at the card and print it out by visiting the link below:

I hope this helps!
