I just started (09/29/2016) Xarelto - 15 mg 2x/day for a large DVT and multiple PE's. In one month I have ballooned 20+ lbs. My legs look like tree trunks, but feel like cement blocks. My arms and hands are swollen, and my stomach looks like I've been sucking on a helium tank. Now, to make matters worse, I started severe dizziness and nausea.....I couldn't walk a straight line if I was forced to!! I spoke with my cardiologist but he had no answers. Of course, I'm told it's probably my diet, but I know this is not the problem. This is what provoked me to search the internet. I'm obviously not the only one feeling like they should be floating in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I'm calling my PCP tomorrow!! Best of health to everyone :) ## Hello, Nicole!...

Hi. I used Xarelto for a few days for DVT. It caused extreme bleeding in me. I have a myoma. It was not time for my period, but I started losing blood and clots immediately. Needed to change things every 10-15 minutes. I already had bad iron deficiency anemia, so that is not a good thing. Now that this side effect stopped, I quit. I have severe fatigue and diarrhea. I read Xarelto has lactose, which I am intolerant to (thanks, doc). So that may explain something. But it does not stop. Same for the dizzy spells and vertigo and disoriented feelings in my head. And for the anxiety and suicidal depression and irritability. I was happy and balanced (even if somewhat concerned about the DVT) before starting. Only a few days of Xarelto, changed me around. I feel horrid. It's a physical kin...

I've been an irresponsible person and it just caught up with me. Years ago I developed a DVT (the doctors think) and had several massive clots in my lungs (PE). I was initially on Warfarin but eventually switched over to Xarelto. I became very bad lately, I started being inconsistent with taking my medicine and even started smoking again (4 cigs a day after quitting 18 years). I still workout 2 hours a day 3-5 days a week and eat fairly well. The other day I didn't feel right and started taking my Xarelto again. One day later (today in fact), I threw a clot...started getting some pain in my left lung and coughed up some blood (same as the first time it happened). The only difference now is I was already a day into taking Xarelto when this occurred. I'm trying to get up the c...

My name is kelvin I have been taking xarelto about months now I was wondering can I take a laxative ? ## Hello, Kelvin! How are you? Which laxative? I'm sorry, but I need more information in order to help you. Can you please post back and clarify? Thank you! The FDA lists the typical side effects of Xarelto as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. ## Can i take robaxin and dulcolax at the same time ? ## Hi I'm on a blood thinner called Xarelto ,20milagram tablets , I take once a day, I'm constipated and like to know what laxative I can use that will be safe with this medication. ## I have been on the blood thinner Xarelto 20mg for 4 days & are constipated. Is there a laxative I can take with this medication that is ...

I have crohns disease ulcerative colitis severe bowel strictures and AF My intestines are all knitted together with scar tissue from perforations and infection and several operations. I am 68 and have had AF for over 30 years but now because of my age my doctor wants me to start taking xarelto. I am reluctant to do so because it would be so easy for me to get an internal bleed that could not be controlled. I dont know what to do , not take them and risk a stroke or take them and risk a big bleed. Anyone else in the same situation as me ? ## I have Crohn's Disease, too. I'm 27 years old. I had a bowel resection in April and developed a pulmonary embolism in my lung a week later. That was April 20th, and I've been on 20mg of Xerelto. Your fears are valid and I'm in a const...

Does anyone else have a similar symptom? I have been taking Xarelto for almost 2 years and I have noticed a change in smell of my urine. It is certainly quite foul and wondered if anyone else has suffered the same fate. I drink between 3 to 5 litres of fluids per day and do not drink coffee. My diet it pretty good and the colour is very light. I do not have diabetes. Any help would be gratefully received. ## OK, I could not figure out what in heavens was going on. I have all of the same systems. My stomach is so large that I sit with my legs open. My leg are the same as you described. One thing I learned about the fluid in the legs is to lay down on your back and place your legs on the wall but the must be over your heart for about 20 mins. a day, this does help to get that fluid out. I...

I have been taking xarelto for 5 months and have lost 28 pounds without any change in diet. It's not a bad thing as I needed to lose some weight. I am assuming it is from the drug. Has this happened to anyone else? ## Hi Rob, I haven't found any record of weight loss on Xarelto's list of side effects from the US National Institute of Health. However they do list "loss of appetite" which could inherently bring about weight loss... The only discrepancy here is that you said you didn't change your diet... So if you're not eating less (from a loss of appetite) then that is definitely a mystery to me... If anything, at least it's good to hear that the weight loss has been a welcomed side effect. I just hope it all balances out when you reach that comfortable s...

I ended up in CC ICU with PE. Was put on Xarelto 20mg. Now my MA cannot supply anymore due to cost. What do I take now to avoid a similar scenario? Thanks. ## Dear Lady M ,I understood your case! This medecine is very expensive! I suggest you should go back to your Dr Asking for substitute other one chipper! Or you can ask a your Dr for Wafarine or 81 mg Asperin(ASA) These are good for your pocket but you have to have INR blood test frequently! Good luck! ## Yes, you need to consult your doctor to see what other medication might be safest for you to try, because they have to look at your entire medical history, as well as any other medications you might be taking. You can learn more about PE here. That site will also provide medication options that are available. Is there anything else ...

I have a successful cardio version 2 months ago. I take 200mg Amiodarone and 20mg xarelto daily. I am in a higher insurance tier until Jan 2017 and a 90 day supply of xarelto is $455 (I pay 45%) I don't want to stop taking xarelto but can I take xarelto every other day instead of daily? ## Hello, Ernie! How are you? You should take it as instructed by your doctor, because doing otherwise could put you in life-threatening danger. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. However, given that this one is so expensive, you may want to ask your doctor about a cheaper alternative that you can try. ## What if there is no other alternative? My copay with Medicare is $569 a month, completely out of ...

I began taking Xarelto again for a few weeks after my second incident of DVT and PE. Ever since I started taking it this time, I have noticed an increase in flatulence. Since this medication is the only thing that has changed in my life, besides the blood clots themselves, I am suspicious of it. Has anyone else experienced this and can simply taking gas medication take care of it. This has been a very embarrassing problem to have. ## @tmpjax30, According to the US National Institute of Health, "abdominal/stomach swelling" is listed as a possible side effect of Xarelto. I wonder if this may be playing a role in the flatulence you're experiencing? I haven't found any other articles suggesting that gas was a possibility, but if Xarelto really is the underlying culprit, I su...

Hello to anyone interested. I have been taking Xarelto for 3 months. 20mg once a day for DVT and P.E's post knee replacement. Started searching for possible effects of the drug and have found that many people seem to have similar side effects to mine. First surprise was sudden nose bleeds. Was warned that I may get a rash or itches, and I certainly do. Bruising for no apparent reason also and increased back pain (although to be fair I do have severe spinal issues) but probably the most annoying thing is very loud ringing in my ears (tinnitus), more so in one side. I'm pretty sure that we are not just imagining this stuff folks, and for those professionals that downplay the tinnitus, it is no joke! It is making life quite difficult. Head aches (some quite severe) are also a probl...

I take 20 mgs of xarelto daily. With this drug can I take raw shelled hemp seed? ## I would think so - raw shelled hemp seed is a consumable food grade product sold in grocery stores. It does not contain any of the psychoactive or medicinal aspects of cannabis. In fact, hemp seeds and hemp milk are known to be nutrient rich and good sources of protein, phosphorus, and more. I hope this helps! Do you have any other concerns about this? ## Thank you Roy for the information regarding XARELTO & HEMP HEART SEEDS. HELPFUL. ## You are very welcome Zoe! Just as a fun fact, I'm not sure if you knew this or where you are located, but hemp seeds are cultivated in a large scale in Manitoba, Canada. ## Thank-you for the information regarding possible interaction if using heart health hemp se...

My hematologist wants to switch me off warfarin for one of these three medications - Eliquis, Pradaxa, or Xarelto. I have a history of CVT and a chronic blood condition. Bottom line, whatever he switches me to, I'm likely on it for a long time unless I have complications. But that's the thing. I seem to always be the person who has the ultra-rare side effect that no one ever reads on the fact sheet. So I'm asking, which of these three is tolerated the best? While I've been on warfarin I've gained nearly 60 lbs. I'm vegan. I ride centuries (100mi bike rides). As a result of all the weight gain, other health issues are becoming more pressing. Arthritis, muscle aches, the threat of diabetes, not to mention what it's done to my self-esteem and marriage. I have ab...

Hello, Hope someone can help. I've been hitting a wall of fatigue everyday about 1pm to the point where I need to take a 2 hour nap when my daughter is napping and its painful to wake up even after that. I take Xarelto everyday with dinner to treat a DVT. I've been on it 4 months. Is this a known side effect? I tested my theory when I started to realize this began after taking Xarelto and skipped a dose one evening. The following day I didn't need a nap and didnt have that same debilitating exhaustion. I'm only 34 this is no time to be this tired after a full nights sleep! It feels like a crash, an unnatural exhaustion. Thanks! ## Hi! Sorry about the problem that you're having. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a lot of side effect information on this dr...

I have 3 stents (seven years) and a heart valve replacement (5 years) but have thin blood, which can cause nose bleeds and prolonged bleeding after cuts or injuries. So my cardiologist put me on Aspirin rather than Warfarin to help prevent blood clots/stroke. Since then I have had only a handful of minor heart issues (palpitations but no chest pain, heart attack or stroke). My cardiologist recently retired and my new specialist has insisted that I need to replace the Aspirin with a combination of Xarelto and Clopidogrel. I fear if i make this change I will have serious side effects, including serious nose bleeds (I once spent 3 days in hospital with a nose bleed). If I choose to stay on the Asprin will I be at serious risk of having a stroke? ## You could ask them to check your clotting...

I have had RLS for as long as I can remember (33yr old female). However it only affected me once maybe twice a month and only ever at night for a few hours and was associated with physical fatigue or alcohol sessions (which were few and far between) and was controlled by taking a cold and flu nighttime tablet. Just over a month ago I collapsed at home with DVT and subsequent bilateral Pulmonary embolisms. In hospital I was on twice daily clexane inj's. and then discharged with Xarelto. Once I completed my script of oxynorm for the pain and it was out of my body my RLS has been unbearable...24/7, I cant get to sleep before 5-7am in the morning (when I suspect the Xarelto has worn off and due to take the next dose). This has been happening for 2 weeks straight, sitting on the floor ro...

I had to take Xarelto due to two sinus venous thrombosis in my head. 8 weeks of heparin injections showed no side effects. But with the first day of taking Xarelto my body reacted by retaining water. Within the first three weeks I gained 24.46 lb hill exercising 5 times a week and eating as I always did. After retaining more and more water I stopped taking it after three months. I started with a weight of 120 lb at a height of 5''8 and now I weigh 157 lb. I have to ad that I started taking it in the middle of March and stopped taking it at the end of June. I was not able to loose any water/weight. I eat less than I always did before even while I exercise. All doctors couldn't find the one thing that changed through Xarelto. Has anybody ever experienced something like this wh...

Well, I am very disappointed as I have been going to the same pharmacy for years and today I was shorted on meds (Xarelto), which I paid for and did not receive. Has anyone else had this happen to them lately? If so, what can be done about it? ## Hello Belinda! How are you? I'm very sorry about what happened. The best thing to do would be to return to the pharmacy and inform them that you were shorted on your prescription. Pharmacies do keep count of medications, so they should be able to figure out what happened on their end, and possibly provide you with the missing medication. I've had this happen, before, and never had a problem getting my pharmacy to provide the missing amount. If it were a controlled substance, it might be a different story, but Xarelto doesn't fall in...

If anyone else experienced these symptoms, how long after being off the xarelto did symptoms go away? ## According to the US National Library of Medicine, all of the side effects you mentioned are typical of Xarelto (Rivaroxaban). They actually list "back pain" as one of the more common side effects patients experience, along with "arm/leg pain" being less common. It also goes on to list "joint or muscle pain", but declares it under a category called "incidence not known". Ref: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0045374/#DDIC603481.side_effects_section From my perspective, I'd say the severity of these symptoms could potentially outweigh the benefits of the medication itself. Have you had a chance to sit down with your doctor and go over any of this yet...
