Doctors Who Will Prescribe Pain Medication For Bone Pain

Updated

I have 3 forms of breast cancer plus cervical cancer in 2011. since I had the chemo/radiation I have suffered from severe bone pain. I have taken vitamins, tramadol, oxycodone, hydrocodone and several others and they do not work. I regular physician is unable to prescribe stronger pains medication. I have gone to specialists and they do not know what is causing the severe bone pain. And the Doctors do not know who I should go to and what to do for me. I have insurance through the state which is a HMO, so I have to call ahead for approval. I would like to know what kind of Doctor to go to for stronger pain medication and can help find out the cause.

Cheryl when was your last ct scan? sounds like they need to check your bone marrow.and maybe go to a mineral metabolism doc. the chemo and radiation can be so hard on your body. your oncologist should be able to help you with this.

I live in Northern Wisconsin and I am NOT addicted to pain killers. I have been suffering for around 4 years now, ans would like to have some kind of relief. The medication I was on has done nothing to help with the pain. If any body knows of any Doctors that deal with bone pain, please let me know.

Hello, Cheryl! How are you feeling? I am so sorry that you're in so much pain.

Have you tried seeing a pain management specialist? They are usually the ones best equipped to understand and deal with this type of thing. To have stronger medications prescribed, you'd need to see a specialist, under the new DEA directives, anyway.

The FDA classifies these medications as being narcotic analgesics, they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Have you every tried anything for nerve pain?

Thank you for responding, it's been a couple of years since my last ct scan. When I go to see my Oncologist he just does a breast exam, listens to everything I'm going thru, then tells me to come back in 6 months. And I just switched to a different Oncologist, cause the previous one did the same thing.

Yes they have put me on Tizanidine for the muscles. But I do go in March 5th to have a EMG done. February 25th I go to the Pain Clinic. I just can not seem to find a Doctor that understands it's bone pain, not muscle. And since the Doctors do not know what to do, then even tried telling me it was in my head. I have gone to Neurologists and the tests came back that the pain is real, but they will not do anything for me and that I will have to live with the pain. I'm sorry, but that IS NOT a true Doctor to me. I'm trying to find a Doctor that cares about me and what I'm going through.

Cheryl I was under the impression you had to have a ct scan yearly. the fact that they haven't done one in several years is concerning, especially since you are having problems, cancers can spread to the bones. just because they do a breast exam and don't feel anything doesn't mean nothing is there. obviously something is going on for you to have so much pain. aside from the oncologist try someone in mineral metabolism, you usually find them in bigger hospitals. they specialize in vitamins ,minerals, and electrolytes that are deficient in your body that may be causeing your symptoms. a mineral and electrolyte imbalance can cause severe aching and pain in joints, usually the back and legs, I hope this helps, my prayers are with you.

Cheryl i just looked up tizanidine/zenaflex it is a very good muscle relaxer. have they tested you for arthritis? this could also explain joint pain and not muscle. they can do a blood test which is specifically for all types of arthritis. also like gout which usually effects the feet and elbows, flare ups are caused by unhealthy diet,.uric acid builds up in the joints and it is very painful. so they need to look at your diet too.

Thank you Karen for all the information. When I got Cancer I changed my diet and also added vitamins as a daily regiman. That was the first thing I started doing before I received the chemo and still do. There is a sign of arthritis, but the pain is in ALL my bones not just the joints. I live in a small town and I have to travel to see a Doctor. Marshfield Clinic was the place I went for my surgery and treatments. In fact I had to have another Doctor go and fix the big pocket that was left open and kept filling up with fluid. The 1st surgeon did not put a drainage tube in, like the 2nd Doctor did. I can not believe that my Oncologists (2 of them now) have not kept on making sure I have my scans. Since I had Cancer in 2011, I have only had 1 bone dentsity scan. These Doctors do not seem to care about me at all. That's why I'm trying to find a new Doctor with no luck at all. I have been going to Duluth, MN for a lot of things, like my appointments for the Pain Clinic and EMG coming up in the next few weeks. Otherwise Rice Lake, WI is where I went to Marshfield Clinic. I have been trying to research to find a better Doctor, but am having no luck. My primary Doctor has been making referrals when I TELL HER I NEED to have this scan or test done. That's what I go to the Doctor for, is to have them help me, not me having to tell them what I need.

Hello Cheryl - I too has Stage III Breast Cancer, 16 weeks of chemotherapy and 40 radiation treatments. I live in NJ and I am having the SAME trouble finding a PM Dr who doesn't say that the pain is in my head. Are you taking tamoxifen? I am and I have HORRIFIC side effects, mostly BONE AND JOINT pain but my oncologist SWEARS that it's not the tamoxifen...I have had severe back pain as soon as they started the chemo, actually the minute they out the needle in my port. There are no tests to diagnose the type of pain that we are suffering from so most Dr's think we are making it up just to get the meds. I also have peripheral neuropathy from the chemo and terrible pain at the site where I had radiation. I did have a GREAT PM Dr bUT I had to switch to Medicaid and that Dr doesn't accept it and because of the new laws, they weren't accepting cash paying patients. So they discharged me with a month supply of meds and didn't even refer me to another Dr that could help me. Like you, I have done my fair share of research and I have found so many sites where people who have had the same course of chemo and taking tamoxifen are suffering the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS, printed them out and brought them with me to every PM consult I've had in the last 6 months. Also, because I have been to several PM Dr's, I am getng the evil eye because they think I am searching fofor a Dr who will just prescribe a certain drug, when that is not the case at all. I am my wits end because I need relief and I feel like I keep hitting a brick wall.
I just wanted you to know that you are not alone out there and you are in my thoughts and prayers hoping that you will find a GOOD PM DR who will help you. It's suqch a shame that PM Dr's, as educated as they are, do not know more about cancer pain...after all, chemotherapy kills all of your good and bad cells and an unfortunate side effects of chemo is chronic/intractable pain.
I am VERY GRATEFUL to be alive but my quality of life has diminished because I suffer so badly on a daily basis and after the battle we've fought, we shouldn't have to fight an even harder battle trying to find relief from pain that truly exists. It should not be this way.
I recently found 2 lumps on my right breast (the one that had cancer), one small one on the bottom of my breast and a HUGE one on the top that feels like an upside-down "T" and feels like it's going up into my chest wall. I have a mammogram scheduled for Thursday June 18th...and I am nervous as hell....
Best of luck to you.

An actual pain doctor I think. I'm guessing they can prescribe stronger meds.

They sure can and do. When they don't usually indicates something else need be addressed before continuing on long term opiate narcotic pain protocols. Almost all successfully treatments include selective accompanying opiate regimens
