Is Xanax No Longer Effective For Me? (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking Xanax for about a year now. I currently take 0.5mg four times a day with more if I know I'm going to be anxious or am having a panic attack. For a while, the Xanax seemed to keep my GAD at bay since I was taking it regularly. I also rarely had panic attacks.

Now, I'm usually anxious and can't function. I have usually around 3 panic attacks a day. They don't seem to be full-blown panic attacks that make me feel like I have to go to the hospital, but they last a while and I spend much of my day lying in bed trying to calm down and I can't hold down a job or go back to school because of it. I have tried taking upwards of 1.5mg of Xanax during a panic attack and it doesn't really seem to do anything anymore. What should I do? I think I'm meeting with my psychiatrist again in August.

Don't ask to be taken off the Xanax while searching for a better medicine and the reasons you are having panic attacks. Perhaps ask for a larger dose with a goal to get to the bottom of your problem.

Won't I just develop a tolerance again if I get a higher dose? My psychiatrist has already said that I'm at the max he is comfortable prescribing to patients.

Yes, but you don't want to spook the doctor by saying they don't work or let's try something else as they might take you off of it altogether. I used to take 1 mg a day, and then was upped to 3 mg yet given 6 mg. Cut down to 2 mg after falling on my head. Previously I had almost died stopping the 3 mg dose and wound up in the hospital. Xanax is not a cure and I am not a doctor. Perhaps something else is medically wrong with you?

Yes, it is possible that you've become tolerant to the medication, so that it no longer works for you.

However, it is not safe to stop taking it abruptly, since withdrawal can create the risk of your experiencing dangerous seizures, as well as other withdrawal effects, such as rebound anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

Did you see your doctor? If so, what advice did they provide?

There are other medications you can try for GAD. My husband and I both take different SSRIs for ours, and they work great for us.
