Oxycontin & Mscontin

Updated

Hey all,
I was born with dislocated hips and have had more than 10 operations throughout my life since I was born to correct the issue, according to my dr. It was the worst case he has ever seen and my hip bones and joints have fused into my pelvis I can not open my legs at all or spread them I can not run or jump walking is extremely difficult and I get tired fast and my legs are in a lot of pain after 27 years I had enough of it so my bone dr referred me to a pain specialist. Fast forward to three years later now I’m 30 years of age. My only hope is for a complete hip replacement and after being on pain medication for the last 3 years nothing is working anymore. My dr had me on 60mg of oxyContin 3 times a day (180mg daily) and short acting oxycodone twice daily. Now, my question is recently my dr changed my medication from OxyContin (180mg daily) to msContin (300mg daily) 3 times per day. How is the equivalent my wise between the two. Did I make a good decision by agreeing to switch. I feel like the msContin isn’t working like the Oxycontin, am I doing something wrong here?

Are you taking 300mgs of the MS Contin 3 times a day?

If so, that should be more than what you were taking of the Oxycontin.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

It would take 270mgs of the Ms Contin (Morphine) to equal what you were taking of the Oxycontin.

Can you please post back and clarify? Are you on any other medications?

Hello, sorry to hear about your condition, cant imagine the pain you must be in. Oxycontin at the level your taking can be increased. I believe the strongest oral dosage is 240 milligram. Although the strongest MS Contin is only available in 200mg pill form. You stated 300mg 3 times a day? Im a little confused. Are you taking a total of 600mg or 900mg per 24hrs? If so and its not working for you then i would ask to go back to Oxycontin. I dont like the oxycontin for the fact it is very euphoric and very very difficult to taper off of. Im 55 and have been pain managed for 21 yrs. Im taling MS Contin which works for my pain, and i have Dilaudid 8mg for breakthru pain. My dose of Morphine is 200mg every 12 hours. But MS Contin can and has been Prescribed every 8hrs. Anyway it sounds to me if the Oxycontin was working but now you may just need to strengthen your dose due to tolerance. You can go up in strength. Thats what i would ask my Dr to do. I hope this helps, you should discuss with your Dr how your pain was managed while taking the Oxy versus the Morphine. There are many different opiates with similiar strengths that are available. I do know some Drs are use to prescribing certain ones and dont like getring into other meds their not familiar with for long term management. You might ask about one called Oxymorphone? Best wishes to you, and keep fighting thru the pain and stay positive and productive the best you can. ,,,,{°¿°},,,,

Hello again friend. I read your messsge again and i think i can understand it better now. The oxycontin you were taking 60mg, prbly every 8hrs, or 180mg daily you stated. Now your taking 300mg MS Contin per day (24hrs). Or 100mg every 8hrs, is this correct. In my previous reply i wasn't quite sure your dosages. I think im on your page now. The MS Contin in my opinion is about the same in my opinion at the dosage your taking, 300mg versus 180mg oxycontin. Although Oxycontin is a stronger type drug, or codeine base and is usually more effective and also more euphoric. You can and probably should ask to be changed back to Oxycontin that you were on. Your Dr csn increase the dose and it should get you back on track. I think what may of happened was just your tolerance built up and your body needs more of the medication to be just as effective. It doesnt mean your an afdict or drug seeking, not at all, and dont let anyone tell you any different. Chronic pain is real and its nothing i would wish on my worse enemy. One.thing you might try though is the low dose medication is for breakthrough pain. Dont take it unless your pain worsens as if you over exerted yourself, and you might try a different type of breakthrough, many drugs seem to work for fine some where they dont for others. Its all in a person's DNA i believe. MS Contin works for my pain, and Dilaudid for my Breakthrough works great, which is a different type of opiate then morphine. You might benefit by the increase of Oxycontin, and a different type opiate for breakthru pain. Does this make any sense? I hope it helps and i wish you well and best of luck...
