Pain Medication For Chronic Back Pain
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have had major back surgery. I had 4 fusions. I have 12 3" screws in me. I'm still in chronic pain. What is a good slow release pain medication for the day and something at night when I get home?

Yes, I have been through hell and back. I've been through 29 surgeries, 2 were brain surgery. I had 5 internal (interthecal) pain pumps put in and taken out. It was open at the highest option with morphine. That is one surgery I would tell you to stay the hell away from! A catheter is put right next to your spinal cord. It's the same way with the internal nerve stimulator. Fentanyl patches may be very helpful to you. I was a very violent person when I was on fentanyl patches. Fentanyl also comes in a sucker form. They use these for cancer patients. I was able to use these and I felt normal again. I wasn't mean, and I didn't feel all drugged up. The Dr who prescribed this was arrested.

Currently, I'm on 30 mg morphine ER 3x A day, 15 mg IR morphine for breakthrough pain. I also take flexeril 10 mg 3x day, ranitidine 2x daily, right now I'm taking valium at night, my body gained a tolerance to Lunesta. I also take Zofran Er and Zofran IT. I am on a lot more. Make sure to add B-12 (not a b-complex) it helps to regenerate nerves. Also potassium. It helps with muscle cramping. One thing, if you're going to be on heavy duty opioids, make sure you have something to protect your stomach and your GI tract. Heavy meds can do some serious damage. Hope this helps. You can ask me anything. If we don't help each other, who will? Feel better.

Much thanks for your response and info. I'm on 30 mg of the oxycodone 4 times daily and it's helps for the first 3,4 hrs then it where's off then I'm back to being in excruciating pain. But I just got crappy news today that I'm not healing after my surgery last June. So ill be seeing my surgeons PA next Tuesday cuz my doctors gone till May. So I'm assuming I will get a cat scan and a mri and see my surgeon and me when he gets back. But my first surgery last June was the worst thing I ever experience. I literally almost lost my mind. So I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do now. Are you a doctor or been through this a lot?

Hello, Josh! How are you?

There are actually several available, such as Oxycontin, which contains a time released formulation of Oxycodone. MS Contin, which is a time released formulation of Morphine and the Duragesic patch that contains the narcotic Fentanyl.

These are narcotic analgesics, so they have the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Those are all options that you may want to discuss with your doctor.

What are you currently taking?
