My 5 yr old granddaughter was put on Vyvance because Ritalin did not work. It has really helped her in school controlling her impulsive behavior but she does not eat. I get a good breakfast in her before she gets the pill but she goes all day till dinnertime not eating or drinking a thing. She is skinny about 45 lbs. The one thing I am concerned about are the increasing meltdowns almost nightly. She will be so good all day go out to like a party or something come home and you can see her aggression starting. I try to just ignore it then I get louder she gets screaming uncontrollably hitting things and just unable to stop until she literally passes out. I am 56 I raised my 3 children her mother my daughter died last year after battling brain tumors for 15 years she had no business getting pregnant in her condition or marrying the convict she did but that's water under the bridge. So I am raising my granddaughter alone her father is in prison for about 10 years I have lost my daughter and also my husband. I have 2 adult kids still at home my daughter just got married and they live with me along with my son. I just don't know if I can go through all this again. Been through it 19 years with my son. I am on the 4th mental health/ behavioral health facility. Any advice you have on these meltdowns?

I have given this great thought since July 4, 2014 and have decided it is important to share our experience with Vyvance. Our 22 year old son had been taking vyvance for 4 weeks, consistently. He and some friends went to the beach for the day and were consuming Alcohol. When it came time to drive home from the beach my son would not relinquish his keys to his friends and went into a rage. He was physical and verbally abusive to his friends. His friends called us stating that our son was scaring them and was totally out of control. Fortunately, we were able to get him home. The night turned into the worst night of my entire life. We wound up calling the police and I honestly thought that I would need to Bakeract him into a facility. He destroyed two of our kitchen chairs, smashed them into pieces. He was enraged, belligerent, wired, and more frighteningly if you spoke to him on the phone you would not know he was under the influence. We asked him to walk one of the grout lines in our kitchen which he did forwards and backwards. It was if he was violently manic. He was finally able to settle down around mid-night. He was up the next morning at 9:00, still nasty, and non-remorseful. He remembered every detail from the prior evening. I then started to suspect that it was the combination of medication and alcohol, which evidently, with all the information I have been able to find it seems to be a common occurrence. When my son was 13 we tried him on wellbutrin and the same behavior was present. Meaness with no remorse. Here is the piece that is very concerning to me. This incident occurred on 7/4/14, on Monday July 7 a letter from our pharmacy (costco) was sent to my son from the manufacturer of Vyvance. A letter of warning and all the side effects of the drug. I believe that there are bigger issues with this medication than anyone is aware of at this point and that the company is trying to limit their liability with the receipt of this letter. Please let everyone who you know uses this drug to be very very careful.

I lost my 25 year old son April 12, 2013 to suicide. He was on Vyvanse and I found in his journal an entry stating that the Vyvanse made him suicidal. I have been to devastated until now to do anything about it knowing that there's nothing I can do to bring him back. However, if our story will bring awareness or help even one person by preventing them from hurting themself or someone else I want to help. Lets do what we can to stop these drug companies from such negligence.

My daughter at age 10, high IQ, was having focussing issues. She started taking Vivance and made straight As in school. She's now 16 and has taken Vivance every school day for over 5 years (not weekends or holidays). She loves the medication and we have never increased her dosage from 20 mg each a.m. BUT, she is a BEAR on it! She is hugely irritable and mean-spirited and her behavior negatively impacts our entire family. Grades are very good, and she's a leader at school, but at home as she comes off the meds she is a BIG nightmare! We've been attributing her nasty behavior to the stresses of school because during the summers she is much more at ease, well now I realize she is more at ease because she isn't putting that evil med in her system. We saw the doctor this week, and my daughter is switching to a new med in a few weeks over Christmas break when the semester ends, which my daughter is reluctant to do because her focus is so good when she is on Vivance. I hate this medicine. It makes my child angry and mean, even though she makes excellent grades in demanding high school courses.

I've been on vyvanse for over a year and I just decided to stop using it because of all the anger I felt all the time. I've been off of it for 3 days and my withdrawal symptoms have been horrific. I do not recomend this medication to anyone.

This drug is bad. The withdrawal symptoms, aggression, sensitivity to sound, paranoia, irritability, hallucinations, and I can go on about the negative side effects. I was off the drug for one day and nearly had a mental melt down. There should be a label that says "Bad Medicine" Has any one felt these terrible withdrawal from Vyvanse?

I'm 18 and have been taking Vyvanse since I was 14... There are some days when I feel fine without it, but usually I'll feel so low down, I'll lack motivation, I'll eat more, and I'll feel just awful without it.. I'll look on the dull side of everything and just think.. "What if...?" about everything.. and the long-term withdrawal symptoms sound terrifying!

Other than that this drug really helped me get through school, and it motivated me to lose a lot of weight... (I'm 5'8, weighed like.. 230 and went down to around 185, but I look around 150-160.. I guess it's from all the muscle in my thighs and bottom..) I'm not skinny but I'm definitely not huge. I'm happy with my body and I feel like I've made a huge accomplishment.. The point is.. I don't know where I would be today if I didn't start taking this, however, they should definitely look into which types of people can take this safely, and which ones will be at risk... I think that young kids should never be prescribed a drug like this.

I'm 16 I started taking vyvanse 20mg during the summer and noticed some slight side effects - aggression (especially if drinking), irritability, and over thinking/sadness. It wasn't too bad until school started I got up 30mg then 40mg now I'm on 50mg - I was trying to go the whole school day w/out the awful come down. My grades are perfect but I would not talk to anyone - I lost lots of friends, I never went to lunch and was so depressed/ stressed out all the time :(. I decided to go off it when my heart rate got way too high and my friend told me I was so different on the meds. I've been off it for 2 days and I already feel happier!! School is harder but I don't hate people and I don't feel sad all the time! I can't believe I was on this medicine 4 so long being so depressed - although I need another medicine option for ADHD.

My girlfriend's 5 year old son is on vyvanse. Normally he is a very loving child, but when he comes down from it, he is EXTREMELY aggressive. He hits, kicks, yells, and now even bites his mom. She takes him to his Dad's as she works a part time job every night at a tax preparing service, and the only time she gets to see him is when he is coming off this med. He even has hit and kicked his grandmother. He tells his mom he does not love her...it is BAD!! After some time (around 5 pm) he calms down. Unfortunately during tax season, she does not get to enjoy her boy after the effects wear off. Any suggested alternatives to this drug?

My beautiful 9 year old daughter turned aggressive and tried to hit me and yelled out of control for almost two hours because I wanted her to read. She can't read and believes she is stupid and wanted to kill herself. I am at my wits end. I will see the dr today.

I am a 57 year old woman. I have been on Vyvanse 70mg for approximately 10 months. I feel terrific when Im on it. I lost a lot of weight and decided to stop cold turkey. I have never felt such anger or better yet rage, feelings of worthlessness, and hallucinations. I was going out of my mind. Never in my life did I feel such aggression. I take the medicine every other day. It keeps me up all night and I really don't like that. I would not go cold turkey on this medicine because of the side effects.are debilitating. If your son is feeling anything like I felt he will probably need some other medication to help him to not lose his mind. Thanks for your story. I believed the withdrawal was from the Vyvanse but my dr. denies it. I asked him if he was covering his ass for giving me such a high dose. He denies any withdrawal from the medicine and he took me off the meds and put me on Serquel XR. That seemed to work for me. Good luck with your son. He is going to need tender loving care. But he can get through the withdrawal slowly.

If YOU'RE getting high on this stuff, then YOU'RE taking way, way too much of it! Get your facts straight and then come back with some serious discussion.

Update on my son: on May 21st, 2012 we took him off the Vyvanse. He was out here for the Long Weekend and I didn't have any of his meds, so I gave him some of my Dexedrine. The results were miraculous. My son went from demon to angel in less than 48 hours and we haven't had ANY problems with him since then. The Dexedrine keeps him focused and on task and he still eats pretty decently ( a couple of weekends ago he 'inhaled' TWO double cheeseburgers in ten minutes ). Since we took him off the Vyvanse, his aggression has gone, he's doing his homework and chores without a battle, is helpful, polite, and is a great kid. He is now taking Dexedrine 2 x 15mg/day and so far it's been smooth sailing all the way. I have my wonderful son back and I'm so happy about it!

This thread is very interesting. I have noticed that a lot of people who take Vyvanse can become angry. I even read one posting where a ladies son got tourettes. I know a lot of people have negative side affects from this stuff, and that's why the forums are available so that we can lash out. However, I am one who can say that this pill has only brought positive affects for my life.
I now have a lot more energy for starters. It used to be on my day off from work I would just lay in bed all day, but now I clean the whole house and get everything else I need to done. Secondly, I pay way more attention to details and plan out my tasks. For example, folding clothes and putting them away for me used to be a nightmare, but now its a snap to the point where I enjoy it. I also notice at work where I am customer service agent my vocabulary is much wider than ever. I tend to use bigger words that I hardly ever use. So, overall this pill has been nice. I would say that I do experience over tiredness from not eating, but when I do eat I feel the affects again shortly after. For everyone that has had bad experiences I am sorry to hear. But, I can't say the same for in my circumstances. I do agree with one of the other postings that it shouldn't be given to kids. I am sort of baffled that it makes kids angry though, only because it makes me very happy, self confident, and motivated. I also typically do not sweat the small stuff either as I normally would.

My 13 year old son has been taking vyvance for about 4 years and the side affects are horrific my son became a very unsocial child. He was always angry and aggressive to everyone. I also notice that he lost a lot of weight and was not growing. It completely ruined his appetite When I decide to take him off the withdrawl's were even worse. He was depressed and angry and lazy for about a month.

Please, as the parent of a 23 year old, a college graduate, and now employed at a start up internet platform company. The grades are just not the important. I know it goes against every competative bone in "your" body. She is a person, not a grade. You deserve to enjoy her in the last few years she will be home. She deserves to enjoy her family likewise. In the end, fullness of living is found in connections with others, most importantly her family. Take less of a GPA, and more of the wonderful daughter she is. My intention is not judging it is more of not making the same mistake i did.
