Dilaudid Doesn't Work For Pain
(Newest replies first)

I am allergic to Vicodin and Percocet so for my last 2 surgical procedures have been prescribed 4mg oral Dilaudid. I understand that it is a very powerful pain reliever but I get minimal relief from it so is it possible that my pain receptors are not responsive to this type of medication? The only other pain med that I take is Lodine (NSAID) for arthritis. It seems that I get more pain relieve from 2 Tylenol but am still in alot of pain with that. Both times after surgery I have stopped taking the Dilaudid after 3 days because I'm still in pain and on top of that constipated. Has anyone had this same minimal response and any suggestions on other pain meds I could use if needed?

I was prescribed Dilaudid 2 months ago for my chronic severe neuropathy pain. Not only am I experiencing the same side effects you are, it takes at least 2 hours for a to start to work I don't itch like I normally do if I take pain medicine. The problem is whether it's a very powerful painkiller like everybody keeps telling me or not it's not working for me my physician is told me there is no other options that is the strongest pain medicine possible. I have been on gabapentin Lyrica and a ton of other medications I don't know what to do next.

See a gastroenterologist and check your gallbladder function. If you have sludge or stones in your gallbladder ask your doctor to remove it. You will feel 100 times better after recovery.

I have to agree 2mg of dilaudid is totally useless for some one that has chronic back pain my doctor use to give me 4mg how ever change it to 2mg and of course I live in constant pain. I am now having extreme pain in my left shoulder and arm. what can I do.

Thank you so much for answering. What is wrong with these people then? My sister said this was the most pain she had ever seen anybody in and she went through natural childbirth and a tooth abscess she said was worse.

Why wouldn't they give me something decent?? I was writhing with the pain. I mean it was so obvious and if I told you where it was you would understand more. It was in my left testicle and then my right at the beginning of this month.

This makes no sense to me. I'm talking an emergency room. Both times.

Steve,
There is a wide variety of fast acting IV,IM,or SC route narcotics given for short term severe pain relief.Fentanyl and Morphine Sulfate are outstanding when used for the very SHORT TERM RELIEF OF SURGICAL OR TRAUMA RELATED PAIN.It sounds as if they prescribed Toradol to you last time before the dilaudid was given. There are far to many medications to list by name or protocol so it's always best to find a skilled prescriber familiar with modern pain management practices . . Best of luck to you.
Regards,
Kenie.

System lost the first part of this question. I had unreal pain twice. the first time they gave an anti-imflammatory after all the pain and it worked quickly. The second time they gave it along with the dilaudid. Both times the dilaudid took two hours to work both times.

This is a simple way to ask a question.

Isn't there a medication that anybody knows that would work more quickly to relieve such obviously unbearable pain.

Just asking. Maybe I was given the best they had at the time ?

Didaudid to two hours to work for me. They gave me something to help it work. They said it was an anti-inflammatory that helped the dilaudid to work.

I guess this was the same thing I was given at an earlier time of the same condition, same unreal pain. But the first time they gave me the anti inflammatory they gave it finally after I had gone through the pain for maybe two hours like before. It worked immediately. I was out of pain within a few minutes.

You may ask you Dr for Morphine or diluadid suppositories or even the liquid for called Roxanol. I found that it's just a different mode of transport and worked more like the IV does for us not the pill form.

Yes,it is very odd. My husband recently had a neck surgery done and Dilaudid 2mg.did not work for him at all!!! The nurses seemed so amazed and would not prescribe anything different. Once he demanded percocets 10mg.the pain went away!

Yes I had my tailbone removed back in October and was in excruciating pain , the Dilaudid did nothing for my pain relief , getting up to just use the bathroom was so horrible I thought I would pass out , my body just did not respond to it , I was given Tramadol instead which help at least take the edge off.

If you are tired of hydromorphone please try 10 mg of oxymorphone. I think you might like it. Ask your Dr about this drug and see what he has to say about it. It is stronger than dilaudid and it will start working in about 20 min.

Stinks I have the same problem I got no relief from it even if I triple the dosage. I don't know why but the only relief I get is from Oxycodone and OxyContin. I have tried everything else and have gone back to the Oxycodone. I get no relief from anything else.

I also never received any pain relief from Dilaudid, however what I did receive was severe nausea & vomiting! Morphine IV in the correct dose is much more effective. Funny thing is that vicodin and/or percocet by mouth has always been effective for post-op pain after the initial self administered dose by IV pump usually for no more that 24hrs.after major abdominal with reconstructive surgery.

I had pain like that at one time they could never figure it out ER dept thought i was just looking for pain meds said it was in my head. They did all kinds of tests found nothing, finally they opened me up to look i had adhesions that had grown on ovary and tubes pulling then everytime i moved and the tubes were twisted they even commented they did not see how i got pregant the 2 times. They were able to save tubes and ovary they cut adhesions away and straightened out the twisted tubes. Something to think about as x-rays nor ultra sound or mri showed that they only seen it by surgery.

Many people have complained that they get zero pain relief with Dilaudid, and I didn't either. I suggest asking your doctor for something different. I suffer with Spinal Compression Fractures, Scoleosis, and Progressive Osteoarthritis, and I am taking Methadone, 10 mg tablets, 2 tablets, 3 times a day. I tried at least 5 different pain meds and Methadone is the only one that works. I think you will have to get a referral to a Pain Management Specialist/Doctor to be prescribed Methadone if you haven't already, because most GP's will not prescribe it, and should refer you to an actual Pain Management Doctor. I hope this helps and you will feel better soon.

I assume the Morphine, Percocet and Dilauded you've taken were the oral pills. Being in "acute" pain may require an injected or iv form of administration, but if those aren't accessible to you, there are liquid forms of some narcotic medications available, and the liquids tend to work better for extreme and acute pain and they work much quicker. Methadone is in pill and liquid form, both taken by mouth, Percocet is in pill and in a liquid form called Roxicet, also both taken by mouth. Both of these in liquid form gave me great pain relief as oppossed to their pill forms. If your Pain Management Doctor will prescribe narcotic pain meds in pill form they will usually be willing to prescribe their liquid forms, if they are available in a liquid, and I know by experience that both Methadone liquid and Percocet (as "Roxicet" in liquid) are both excellent for relieving extreme acute pain. Just keep in mind that the dosages of liquid meds are obviously much different than the dosages of pill form meds, since the dosage must be converted from mg to ml, but your doctor or pharmacist will do the conversions for you and a liquid doser should always accompany the prescription bottle. To all of those in need of pain relief but are still suffering, my prayers go up for you and I hope my comments help you find the pain relief you need and if mine doesn't I hope someone else has the answer for you. May God Speed and God Bless.

About a week ago I had my tailbone removed and I also can not take Percocet or Vicodin due to terrible nausea , I was prescribed Dilaudid 4 mg. and it did absolutely nothing I don't believe it even took the edge off when I got up to use the bathroom the pain was so excruciating I thought I was going to pass out , I would have rather had the nausea from the Vicodin or Percocet anyway over the pain I was in my poor husband had to literally carry me back and forth to the bathroom.
