Dilemma With 2 Narcotic Scripts From 2 Doctors (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi all. I have intractable pelvic RSD, peripheral neuropathy, lumbar facet spondylosis. I live in California and am about to have to change insurances at the end of this month. The new insurance has ridiculously high Rx prices. I go to a PM for all my pain meds, but my primary dr has in the past managed them for me. My question is if anyone knows if I get an Rx for the 60mg Oxycontin twice a day like usual from my PM and then my primary to write a script for 40mg 3 times a day and then I can go to 2 totally different pharmacies and fill one with my insurance and the other at another pharmacy and pay with cash, will that flag the DEA and cause my PM to get a notification of "Doctor shopping"? I am just trying to have enough meds to get me through an extra month until my husbands new job let's us get medical coverage?

I had to do this one other time a year ago when the same thing happened with me loosing my job because I could no longer work and I wasn't married yet to get my husbands insurance. The first 2 months I had no problem, but the third and LAST month I was needing to do it to get me enough meds to last me the 3 month waiting period, my husband forgot and filled both scripts under the same insurance but just at 2 different pharmacies instead of paying cash at the second one. My pain doctor found this out and thank God I was able to explain my way out of it and he didn't discharge me as a patient, but now in this situation again, I'm afraid to try it one last time til we are settled with yet another health insurance. I would really appreciate anyone's advise or experience they could share regarding my situation. I truly am not a doctor shopper, I am just afraid to run out of meds and be in massive pain and / or risk getting into trouble.

Also my old PM dr did set up a new pm dr abd few other names incase but when I actually went there at the time I supposed to the new dr had a changed heart and sent me ( including many other patients) home empty handed ! Yea changed his words and gave me nothing but gabapentin !!! And told me i'll be fine with my pain and stopping 120mg Opana and 150mgRoxycodone wont make me sick !!! He was an animal (Dr Akhtar Purvez) someone that everyone should stay away from
Anyway when he changed his promises I felt lost again and started looking around on my own to find a PM dr and it is not easy these days but after few wasteful visits I finally found one that accept to treat me good but with a little smaller amount of what I was getting and today I had my first visit and so far I'm happy with the result.

Hi. I'm sorry you too are in pain. What you described defines doctor shopping so don't get cut off. I've been where you are right in LA and done just that. It always catches up to you. I don't want to see you suffer. Good luck.

Devin, It is outrageous and she should be reprimanded, but I've seen signs in chain pharmacies that say they can refuse to fill a prescription for any reason in my State(TX.) She's definitely an A-hole and one of those busy body holier-than-thou types who look down their noses at everyone. According to her probably anyone on narcotic pain relievers is a drug addict! I would definitely move all my prescriptions to a different pharmacy Pronto! The chain pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc... Have some of the worst pharmacists on earth, it's like their on an anal crusade to stop narcotic usage via their pharmacy and most of them don't carry what I take(80mg oxycontin and 30mg Roxicodone)because that's drug addict drugs. That's why I use a non-chain pharmacy that caters to cancer and chronic pain patients. You should find one where you live and ditch that Nazi pharmacy! Next she'll be diagnosing your medical condition and calling your doctor stupid for what their prescribing you...

Devin, this time of year a lot of new Pharmacists have just graduated and are working as Pharmacist for the first time. So it is better to try and go when a Pharmacist you know is working. Call and ask to speak to Jane Doe. Tell her you wanted to come in and get your rx filled and wanted to be sure she would be there.

I have lupus, fibro and a failed back surgery. I just moved from Indiana to Phoenix 4 weeks ago, and getting my meds has been pure HELL. I got hooked up with a PM clinic that seems to be good, but the pharmacies are just INSANE. I brought all of my medical and pharmacy records with me to give all the new docs I have to get a complete profile of my condition.

The second day after we hit Phoenix I went to the PM for my initial visit and left with a script for 150 15mg oxy IR's. On the way home we stopped to fill the script and the pharmacist said they couldn't fill it because they had "met their DEA limit" and couldn't take on any new controlled patients. I'd never heard of such BS in Bloomington where I'm from. And in Bloomington I was getting 30mg oxy IR and MS Contin for years with no problems except sometimes they wouldn't have enough and I'd have to go to another place, but it was never a hassle like it is here. Then to make matters worse, they said they couldn't call other stores of the same brand for me to see if they could fill it. So I had to go to another pharmacy and they said they wouldn't fill the script of IR's without also having a script for time released OC's, and even then they would only fill for 120 of the IR's, not the 150 it was written for. They too said that they couldn't call around to see if one of their other stores could fill it. So then we tried another pharmacy and got the same BS about not filling the IRs without an OC script too. And again they wouldn't check other stores for me. Off we go again to another store. They say they would fill it, but they didn't have enough. Fortunately the sweet girl that was working took pity on me after I told her the nightmare I was having trying to get it filled. She called 5 stores before she found one that would do it. God bless that girl! LoL

Anyway, we get to that store and they said they would expedite it for us if we were going to wait, or we could come back later. We decided to wait, and an hour later we asked if it would be much longer and the pharmacist said it would be awhile because she had to do "extra paperwork" for the DEA. By this time I was hurting so bad I just wanted to go home and go to bed. But they said they would call when it was ready. Needless to say they never called, so I went to pick it up the next day and they started giving me grief over having a Indiana drivers license, but they did give me the script with the suggestion I get a Arizona license ASAP. I'd been in the state a whole 3 days!

Now things get even more messed up after this months visit to PMC. I start making the rounds of the pharmacies same as last time, and keep getting the same story about how they are only allotted a set amount of controlled substances per month by the DEA, and once they run out that's it until next month. One pharmacy I went to had a locked door and you had to knock. Then a cute little Asian girl comes to the door, but instead of opening it she talks to me through the mail slot. I show her the script for 150 15mg oxy IR, and she said they don't fill controlled substances period...NONE!

Then I go to another pharmacy and the tech says "sure we can do this, do you have your license?" I was elated! But then she saw it was from Indiana and told me they couldn't accept my ID. Then on top of that she said even if I had a license from Arizona the address would have to be from within a 5 mile radius of the store. So I ask her if I have my brother-in-law who lives within 5 miles and has an Arizona license come in would she fill it? To which she replies, "now that you've told me that, no, that would be cheating the system." WTF!!!

I end up going to the pharmacy that I finally got them filled at last month. Different pharmacist working, and he asked if I'd ever filled there before and I affirmed that I had. Then he starts grilling me about my medical condition while typing into his terminal. He then informs me that the Indiana database called "INSPECT" had no record of me! I tell him it has to be a mistake because I been taking this medication for years, and my PM in Indiana ran a "INSPECT" report on me and every other patient before every appointment. Then he says "maybe I mispelled your name" and I give him my license so he can type it correctly, and i also give him my bottle from the previous month that was filled at that exact pharmacy. Which he then replies to me with "just because some other pharmicist filled it, doesn't mean I will." (Basically just being a power mad asshat with a Napolion complex!) It dawns on me that I have my pharmacy and medical records where we're staying and that I could go get them and come back. But first I offer to give him my username and password to my pharmacy accounts at CVS and Marsh so he could verify that I was on this exact same medication, but at twice the dosage. He wouldn't do that though, it would be to easy. So I call my wife and ask her to pull my pharmacy records, leave the script with him, and go to get the pharmacy records. We get back and then he starts scrutinizing my records and giving me even more grief. After about 5 minutes of that he says he'll get started on filling it, and over a hour later I FINALLY had my medicine.

I'm telling you, I have NEVER had issues like this before. It's just torturing people who are already going through HELL, and it seems like they enjoy it. I don't wish anything bad on these people, or anyone they love. But the universe has a way of taking care of people like that last guy.

I really don't know what to do, because I've been told that it's going to be like this every month. After my first appointment out here it took over 4 hours to find a place to fill this particular medication. And my second appointment was at 3:30pm, and I couldn't get the script filled until well after 8:30pm.

I've had dilaudid before and it worked well for me, but I'm not established enough with this PC to be comfortable asking her to switch me to it. And even if she did, I may still have the same problem getting it filled. Who knows, it may even be worse!

All the pharmacies here in Phoenix say that there are so many PC prescribing Oxycodone that it's only going to get worse, but I don't see how that could be possible.

Thanks for letting me sound off on ya'll, and I hope we can somehow get a better system in the future so that we don't have to suffer needlessly, and be treated like junkies and criminals.

Wizzy, if it is not time for you to be out of your other prescriptions, it is doubtful a pharmacist will fill the new ones. Also when you go back to the doctor that wrote the
roxy 30 and 2 milligram Xanax, he will see that you have gotten the Subutex and 1 milligram Xanax from another doctor and won't write you any more prescriptioins for pain meds. It doesn't matter what pharmacy you go to. They all have to send in info to the state Prescription Monitoring Program, PMP keeps track of the prescriptions patients get filled in their state and usually in neighboring states.

Some doctors will fire you as a patient for taking controlled substances from another doctor or using different pharmacies and some doctors are ok with either as long as you notify them about doing it as long as the controlled substance is not for what the primary doctor is prescribing them for. The main thing is doctors want to be kept in the medication info loop with their patients, it's for the patient's welfare and the doctors liability. In Texas you would have to actually doctor shop, meaning many doctors and pharmacies to set off any alarms. Some doctors monitor pharmacies for your activity, but most are to busy and most pharmacies have all controlled substance activities by you, if you act like a drug seeker they could look you up. The main thing is to make sure all doctors know about each other and that you used a different pharmacy, if you do this there is NO way the state or government can prove you were deceptive in obtaining multiple controlled substances. I was fired once from a pain doctor for taking one pain medication prescription from a dentist after having 2 wisdom teeth removed, but this doctor had been in trouble with the DEA a couple of times and was firing anyone who took ANY pain meds from any doctor for any reason. The doctor I see now thought that was ridiculous and only requires me to keep them in the loop about other doctors and pharmacies.

My Neurologist has been prescribing Firocet with codeine for years. I then started going to a pain management Dr., and it was on my record going in I was being prescribed them. Pain Management is prescribing 10mg. of Oxycontin twice a day and 15 mgs. of ms-con-tn er twice a day. Is it safe to have both filled.I have been, but pain mg mt., is really cracking down. Is it safe to continue to have both filled?

I got into a car accident a month ago, went to emergency and had x-rays done... I had a female doctor who felt my pain, knew my tailbone and neck were stiff and sore and prescribed me Tylenol 3, muscle relaxant ants, and toridol... She said if I get more swelling on tailbone, tingling in hands/legs to come back right away!

I went a week being in pain, up at night crying, taking baths, ointments and ice on back... I was having problems lifting heavy objects, playing with my little one, and walking up stairs... So I went back to emergency and got fast tracked to a horrible Docter... I have ulcers so can't take naproxen 500 mg... But that's what he prescribed... I told him they make me sick, and he laughed and said ohhhh ya??? Sarcastically... So I left upset, holding my back and crying in pain.

I called my family doctor and he said to come in after hours to take a look... When I went in my doctor said I had severe spasming in tailbone and to come back tomorrow if still in pain...

I went the whole night up crying, couldn't sleep in bed... I took a T3 and muscle relaxant, but still in pain...

So the next morning I called doctor and he said he was too busy to see me and go to emergency... So I did... Crying, sitting uncomfortable... And I got the SAME terrible doctor and I sit down... He comes in waiting room, publicly announces how I am supposed to take my naproxen and I'd be fine!!! So I said it made me sick, and he laughed and laughed... Shook his head, said I'm sure your really in pain! Smirking, saying I was in yesterday and pretty much a liar and have addiction issues in front of everyone in waiting room!!!

I grabbed my chart, asked to get second oppinion and saw another Docter, who said I needed T3s, naproxen, and physio on my back...

As I was leaving the doctor who humiliated me, went and public ally told all the nurses and the other doctor I'm an addict, he picked up the phone and slammed down, laughing at me...

As I walked out I heard him whisper against what I said... I felt so humiliated, and upset I went to pharmacy and I altered my doctor note, and cops came in and arrested me... I know it was stupid! I know what I did... I've never been in trouble with the law ever, I'm a mom, I am middle class, educated and have 3 yrs university... I have no addictions...

My issue was that I had one good doctor, my car accident documentated... My family doctor to busy to see me, and the lack of staff in emergency...

I have a court date in a month, it's a felony, I have a defence lawyer...

My question is, I'm still in pain... I haven't taken anything for pain... It was merely the fact I never wanted to step foot in an emergency room again! If I went to another female doctor explained my accident and and pain and I went to another pharmacy, am I red flagged? Will I ever have help? Or I sealed my fate when I screwed up... It was for T3s... Nothing else... Please no humiliating statements... Thank you... I'm in Canada by the way...

I thought you could get T3's over the counter in Canada? No script needed? Like 222's also?

I have a friend who got 2 prescriptions last month and I'm wondering how it happened???

She went to a PM (new to her) received fentanyl patches. Then 2 days later went to family dr that usually doesn't handle pain meds. The family dr prescribed Percocet 10. Now I tolD her the pharmacy would catch it. TheY DiDnt!! She doesn't plan on going back to the PM because she did NOT like the place.

She says she told the family dr about fentanyl! But why did they allow her to fill 2- from different doctors? Was it because one is long acting and one short?

the pharmacies and the gov't track the distribution of a rx not just what your insurance will pay. I have been in the same predicament as you. and I asked my pharmacist and that is what he told me. unfortunately, meds that are working for people like you and I seem to be a problem for the gov't. the people who misuse these meds are the people who are ruining the care that we receive. my doctor has just told me that "the office" decided to stop giving these meds to her patients any longer. so she is letting her office board of directors dictate her treatment care for me and many others I have spoken to in the office. I am, needless to say, looking for a different doctor.

It doesn't matter if you're paying with cash or insurance. The pharmacist has to check the PMP in your state. If it is too early, they do not have to fill it.

Thanks for the advice,
Thank you Mark for the good information, it was supposed to be like what you said! he retired himself gave the last month supply and referred me to new dr but when I went there he chose to 100% stop all the pain medication i had suddenly after 9 years and said i didn't promise to your pm dr to give you any pm medication !!! Not even lower it in few month thats why i had no choice but to try another dr and another but as you know its not about your injuries nor your records once you go to a new PM dr its like starting from scratch or even worst ! Im sorry for your friend and I had the same experience 2 years ago i end up in ER and they gave me some pain killer for the small surgery I had and what I did tried to be honest with my PM dr and told them the story and even that i have the left over available for them to trash it if they chose to but my honesty made me get discharge from them ! Maybe i could just not mention it and that would not get me fired from the pm dr i was going but its all that you don't expect & not whats logical its what they say even on weekends that you have no way to call your PM dr to ask them before your normal treatment of whatever case happened to you! So I learned to be honest but not too honest once I find one good PM dr i would only use them and only one pharmacy, honestly its a war for us who really need Painkillers to have a normal life i was lucky ( i was almost about to give up) to find this new PM dr and I could actually discuss everything on the phone before my app and I almost know what is she going to write for me instead of just go there and leave empty handed! Btw the stupid dr(AKHTAR PURVEZ) from hope clinic that left me with absolutely no medication and expecting me to stop in 24 hours!!! Got in trouble for doing that ! I found out he was promising to patients for a good treatment just to collect their money and send us home with nothing he was doing that to many others so they reported him to The board and he's no longer in the office to ruins peoples life. Anyway good luck and I hope you dont have to deal with the stress of not being able to get your medication and I hope My app goes well too! It's actually tomorrow morning and I hope things goes as i was talking on the phone with her! Thanks all and wish you all a life with no pain.

Tina...from what I understand, if its written for a diff strength and/or dosage, it can b filled. But.... pharmacists can refuse to fill anything upon their discretion.

BL....how do u know this? The DEA has been all over the dispense of pain meds...cracking down on pharmacies, distributors, doctors...etc etc. Fining all the above and preventing their access to pain meds n its only getting worse!
