My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

Get ready for a month and a half of pure hell. Seizures, insomnia the works. Coming down of Xanax is the WORST feeling in the world. P.s. your anxiety is gonna go through the roof. On top of probably not sleeping..at all. Good luck, I feel for ya

Never go off xanaxx all at once. You could die f rom it by having seizures doctors don't seem to understand this or really don't care and this is sad wish our medical care was left up to doctors and patients Government has no reason to tell us what to do they get their meds so stay out of my life.

Marie,
If things are so bad you believe your life is in danger you have the right to be seen at your emergency room they must treat and stabilize you until you can recieve alternate care. Withdrawals from benzodiazepine class drugs can be life threatening .Im sure no one wants you dead but most doctors wouldn't risk their license to just cut you off for absolutely no reason . Even if your dismissed they traditionally refer to an alternate prescriber or issue a limited amount to hold you over. Do yourself a favor and seek emergency care cuz this cold turkey Withdrawl is dangerous.

I have been prescribed the same since the mid 80s. I am currently working outta the town I live in. And recently ran out of my xanax. After calling my doc and rescheduling my appointment I am in the same boat. No pills, no doc and in very bad shape. I didn't ask to become dependent nor did I ask for this type of medication, guess I trusted what I was told by docs. I've never abused the pills or sold em so why am I treated as a criminal? Recently my doctors come and go frequently, in a crappy health clinic I use. I self pay because my insurance doesn't cover physical treatments. Any suggestions?

Thanking you for responding. Spent Easter at the cemetery and ended up spending the night there with my two dogs in my van as yesterday was Kim's birthday. Actually slept perfectly and at peace. I'm sure I would considered mental -- I seemed to need the connection. The loss never goes away. Bless you, SayWhat.

Hi everyone. Some doctors can be real a**holes. I think they are on a Power Trip at times. I'm sick and tired of hearing about blame-shifting. The pharmacy will say it's the doctor's fault. The doctors will say it is the DA's fault. All blame shifting. This is ridiculous. Give grown adults their medication. We have to take a stand together or this will never change. I mean never change ever. Going to get worse. I get addiction, trust me I get it. But this is what's hurting so many of us that need our medications. A lot of overdoses. We have to stand together. And doctors and pharmacists are petrified. They're running scared. Have a great week.

We all need to fight the good fight or nothing will change. So I never tuck my tail between my legs and run. I always speak up and so far I get my medications without any resistance. Good luck.

That is very wrong and very dangerous for him to do that without weaning you off.you should report the Dr. To wherever you report them, But you may have to go to a pain management place to get something,Not trying to scare you but getting off Xanax is very dangerous cold turkey.good luck, I will pray for you, And the government doesn't understand why there is an epedemic on street drugs? GIVE ME A BREAK.

I have HUGE anxiety everyday for years. I have been on Ativan and now on Xanax instead,. I have tried to go off it 3 x and all 3 times I had to give up in 3 weeks. YOU won't sleep, feel like crap and could have a seizure. Benzos are harder than Pain meds to get off of bc the withdrawal is so dang long. 3 weeks should be long enough but it goes on and on. I'm allowed 4 Xanax a day but I save 30 from each script to put in 'survivor bag".

Re: FREEDOM (# 474) Expand Referenced Message

You need to find a different place to vent your issues. This is a place where people come with real issues and real problems. You've got real balls coming in here talking to people like that. This is a sensitive issue and we do not need people like you coming in here throwing around these kinds of words and nonsense. Go somewhere else with your petty insults. Please don't post in here again. Or you will be reported.

Re: FREEDOM (# 476) Expand Referenced Message

I knew you had been here Freedom from your first post. I too used to chase the high. Never one to admit it to my dr...I went every mo. Thru 3 days of withdrawal. Both parents were alcoholics, so I knew I would do this. Then illness high....8 bad ones. But at my age now, I no longer search for a high...Definitely don't drink on my meds. I repeat in youth we learn, in old age we understand. I do understand and I know freedom knows of what he speaks. He needs to be understood. Try a pain spec. But be prepared to give a U/A every 6 months. My doc does not care about marijuana. He wants to know I am still taking my miniscule methadone. I am -he's happy.

Re: Lisa (# 535) Expand Referenced Message

You are so right. This happens on every drug forum I've been on. There will always be the know-it-alls who haven't experienced a protracted withdrawal attempting to lecture those of us who have/are.
We need to simply support each other.

I think we should all take a deep breath and just listen to everyone.. This is supposed to be a safe place. I am not here to judge. The posters here are asking for help.. If they are addicted it’s not our business. I am just going to post my experience that’s it.. I’m only going to post something if I’ve been through it

Re: Anne (# 567) Expand Referenced Message

Post one legitimate source that states alprazolam (alone) can cause edema, swelling in the hands and feet or jaundice. JAUNDICE!? I have never in my life heard of alprazolam causing hepatotoxicity. That is truly absurd.

Perhaps in EXTREMELY rare cases where a paradoxical reaction may occur there "might" be tachycardia or palpitations. I wouldn't consider that to be a rational hypothetical.

Let's be real though, Anne, you didn't address anything I said. You just came back with your typical ad hominem. I have just as much of a right to speak my opinion on here as anyone. Especially you. The difference with me is that I don't "claim" to be a medical professional nor do I offer anything under the tutelage of "medical advice". I don't need to "watch what I say". I can say whatever I want as long as it's not obscene or inflammatory.

Alas I wasn't speaking to you. I was speaking to another "self proclaimed" medical professional who seems to be in the minority regarding his opinion of xanax. Him against the world. In that scenario; i'm part of the world. I take it nearly everyday and have been for years and my health is tip top!

By the logic bestowed in "gatorgetters'" post he shouldn't prescribe any CNS depressants because mixing alcohol or any other CNS depressant would be no different than mixing xanax with any of the above. So his logic in singling out xanax is quite subjective and creates a very crystal clear double standard.

its scary for me to read all this, i was never told anything about the medications, additictions, withdrawels, ''nothing'' i found out when they started hitting the streets and reading different stuff, ive been on xanax for about 8-9 years now, 2mgs. 4x's a day, although i dont take that much, only when i get nervious and start feeling paniky, still my body has done gotten addicted without me ever even knowing it, whats scary is doctors are dropping paints cold turkey now, its really scary, i dont have 20 thousand for 30 days of rehab and still have panic attacks severly. dont know what to do

no it is not to late for you, if i had your knowlage of knowing about the withdrawels 9 years ago, i would have never stared taking them, my fear now is not only panic attacks but dieing from medication i believed was helping me, if i was in your shoes i would stop taking them now, ask for something mild like kolinapin but as of now a week you are safe, 6 months from now i wont be able to tell you the same, i dont want to see other person end up like us who has been on them for years and now face this nightmare, i have never once abused my medication, ur body gets addicted without u having any clue, they give ppl xanax as short term use for ppl who looses a loved one or has something tracic happen, to help them get threw it, them stop them, so your safe now to quit, and i wish i had that same choice, i wouldnt touch other xanax, my daughter took them a month before her heart surgery and never had any withdrawels or problems at all,

I was on 40mg/day Valium years ago and had it stolen...having only 11 days to go I believed I would be ok since Dr.s run the risk of you being an abuser and lying to them. By day 5 I was in bad jitters feeling faint and by day 8 it was if my heart was in tachycardia...I have heard Xanax withdrawal is much worse and dangerous so he could be sued! You need to find help and I pray for you that you find some. That was not right of him.

Dawn this is potentially very serious. Without over reacting there is a chance you can become quite sick and have a seizure or a stroke. Doctors are for the most part unaware of the dangers of Alprazolam. They know about its addictive properties, but most are not very familiar with withdrawal. Plus it sounds like your Doctors office is playing games with your life. Visit the ER within the next week if you get too sick, and I would just show up at your Doctors office. If you make too much of a problem however the Doctor might take you off the medicine you need. Cold Turkey withdrawal with long term use is the worst thing that ever happened to me!

the doctor does face serious repercussions if something happens to you, don't listen to this person. I work for appeals and grievances at a huge medical insurance company. Federal law mandates that a doctor not give the medication if they haven't seen you, a new prescription, etc. the doctor took a oath to DO NO HARM. withdrawals are very serious. the doctor should have given you enough meds to either 1. taper off slowly or 2. until they were able to see you again. I've seen providers fined and extreme cases stripped of their licenses for violating their oaths.
and btw, you don't fit the model of drug seeking behavior. Symptoms of withdrawal include mood and behavior changes, emotional instability, etc.
good luck.
