Abuse Deterrent Xtampza Vs. Oxycontin

Updated

Newly FDA approved Xtampza ER has a different abuse deterent additive than Oxycontin, however I have not tried it yet for effectiveness. I have taken Oxycontin over 10 years so I felt the huge difference when they began adding abuse additive to it. I am curious if anyone has info on this new med, how it works as compared to Oxycontin, or all info on it that may help me decide if I should switch? I always had excellent results with Oxycontin but when the abuse stuff was started it took so much away from effectiveness. Appreciate any info. Thanks.

Hello, Lynx! How are you?

I was reading about it, after seeing your post, but they only list their deterrent under a proprietary name and do not list any specific details on how it works.

However, they do say that, if needed, the capsules can be opened and the beads can be sprinkled into food, if someone has trouble swallowing them and that they can also be opened to administer the beads through a feeding a tube.

It contains Oxycodone, just like Oxycontin, and is also time released. Thus, the FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause similar side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Does anyone else know more?

It is terrible medicine, I have a high tolerance to all opiates so this is how I evaluated it: I had the 27mg capsules which are supposed to be the same as the 30mg op (perdu pharma) - it's a lie and a scam. As I said before I have an extremely high tolerance so I don't condone anyone else trying this. I started with 3 of the xtampza 27mg, and an hour later nothing. Took 4 more an hour later, still nothing. So I took 5 more, so now within a couple hours 12 of them; so 324 mg of oxy, and still no relaxation, little to no pain relief. If I would have taken 12 30mg oxy op30 I would have been fine, but trust me I would feel comfortable, drowsy, lots of pain relief. Now I've never done that with 30s but I have with the 60s, took 5 at once and felt nice, but the xtampza, forget about it. They have manipulated this good drug for pain and turned it into I don't know what, but it sucks and is worthless, especially if you've been on these kinds of pills for 10 plus years, you know it's all a scam!??

I am on 36mg Xtampza and they suck. Never get the relief, never feel good enough to work. Not a great pain killer! Takes forever to release and never does get to even touch my pain level. I was on Oxy 80's and 30's for 10 years and my doctors office got closed down by the s***ty uncaring DEA and this is all anyone will prescribe me! My life is hell and ruined! I cannot work and barely am functioning as a human being! It sucks, that's all I can say!! The DEA has ruined many lives and put many people in the street who are now doing illicit drugs! Good move *****s!! WTG!!

I need to disagree with you saying this is a scam. Not doubting your tolerance is high, but I have been taking opiates for nearly as long but not as much, about 80 mg a day nearly a decade. Anyways Xtampza hope I said it correctly, has replaced my 20mg oxycontin prescription and I can honestly say it kicked my ass. It is WAY MORE POWERFUL. Honestly. Now I take half of one and it feels 3 x the strength as my older oxys. Just saying, they work, and xtampa is strong as all hell. Maybe your tolerance is e tremly to realize how strong and long lasting they are. Honest one 18 mg xtampa kicked my ass for nearly 5 hours. Thanks.

so you took 20mg oxy 4 times a day so what strength xtampza are you taking?

I take Xtampza ER now and I find them to work quite well. The only difference between this and oxycontin is it is impossible to abuse.

You must be high to say they work the same!! Delivery is so slow. My pain is never relieved. Bottom line, God made things very fair! Things that work have side effects period. There is no wonderful magic in the world...If you go down a huge
Mountain you certainly will have to climb up the other side at some point... Been on Xtampza for 4 months and I can barely work... On the OxyContin I was 100x better! Sorry I strongly disagree with you...Good luck To you!

The delivery is supposed to be slow. It's not an immediate release medicine, that's what the ER ( extended release ) means. Slow and gradual. Only IR ( immediate release ) is going to give a quick delivery.

I was on oxycontin 80 milligram twice a day now I'm taking xtampza 36mg 4 x a day. Oxycotin works better. Been on it for over 18 years with no back or hip issues and now its back. The xtampza makes me relaxed. Oxycotin does the job.

Did you take this medication with food? It doesn't work to well unless you take it with food. I found a meal with a high fat content works best.

Did you take this medication with food? It doesn't work to well unless you take it with food. I found a meal with a high fat content works best. I have different issues with this medication. It caused anxiety and depression. It controlled my pain. Pain control was wonderful on 18mg taken 3 times per day. Had some issues with withdrawal symptoms, but that has ended. I learned about the importance of eating with this medication from the info sheets included with the medication.

What food did you take this with and how long before it started to work well

I take it with a full meal doesn't matter what it is, but I noticed that with fried foods or fast food that it works much better. Cottage cheese 4% fat works, buttered toast, and Ensure. I'm going to try half and half milk which has a high fat content because I cannot continue to eat fried foods three times a day. Also I like oxycontin better and will be going back to that next month. Remember every one reacts differently to all medication.

I thought the cottage cheese and ensure were making a difference with me. I just wasn't sure. I don't each much by mouth anymore so hard to get all the fat needed. I have been on OxyContin in past but problems with it sticking in throat. It was overall a better medication. Maybe they will get it right sooner or later. Thanks for your input!!

Why mess with something that at this stage works? I have been reduced by 1/3 on dose. Now attempting to switch by doctors orders. Very much an attempt to get government happy and nothing to do with my pain. We're all experiments.

Hesitate to say it but I feel like you are typical of one of the abusers that makes it so hard for those of us who work with our doctors to figure out what will work for our situation. I would be curious to know where you get all of these pills that you are able to pop them like candy. Xtrampza er releases every 12 hours. Are you aware of that?

Hello Lynx. I was on oxycodone, 4x 15mg daily for 19 years and was switched over to this medication under protest due to not being able to acquire it in my area. Xtampza ER 27mg. BID for me, gives no relief whatsoever, when I mentioned the fact that even Walmart and Walgreens can't get it, he told me "Tough S*it", that's what you get so don't ask for your old meds again. I'm in the process of finding another pain management group, but my current 'pain infliction group' will NOT receive my medical records from ANY physician, not even my spine surgeon! My lumbar and cervical regions in my back are crushed - the damage covers the entire regions mentioned - so you can imagine my level of pain. I can't eat but once a day due to the pain, so high fat foods are something I don't do much. Those foods normally make me physically sick as well, so I try to avoid them. I've taken two Xtampza ER 27mg at 4-hour intervals and 0 results. I think they're absolute junk and believe the Drs. are getting a kickback of some kind from Patheon Pharmaceuticals.

I've been on several different meds and xtampza er seems to work great. I do have to eat it with a whole milk product. (i.e. Yogurt cottage cheese) I do have to wait around an hour before it works but the pain relief is equal to the OxyContin I was taking. If the OxyContin works then this should too. It just takes a little more perseverance. I break capsules apart and put on yogurt to eat. Hope you get your pain under control. It is a shame that so many addicts have caused a world of suffering for those of us in true pain

How much food do you take with Xtampza? does it work better with larger meals compared to smaller ones. Say like dinner meal compared to a small cup of yoqurt?

The only way to make this work is to eat a high fat disgusting meal? All I see is a bunch of overweight patients with no pain relief. That is horrible that that is the only way to make it work. What if you have high cholesterol or have to be on a diet?

It sounds like they're trying to eliminate the weak Whether it be through a horrible quality of life from pain or getting fat in order to make the meds work.

Re: CHAD from Kentucky (# 57) Expand Referenced Message

I have been on regular oxycodone instant release for approx 4 yrs now and it works best for me. 30mg tabs every 4 hrs. I had gone to a couple diff Pain Mgt Specialists in past....both said only give extended relief meds. I cannot take ANY extended release meds of any kind because my body chemistry absorbs it all at once like an instant release tablet. There are others like me who have the same issue and cannot take these ER pain meds....if I took for example an oxycontin 80 mg tab .....the whole 80 mg would hit my body at once and I could be in dire consequences....so all the pain specialists in my area do not give anyone IR meds.....I also found all pain docs the meanest, rudest docs I have ever been around....at least in my area....you ought to hear their patients complain about how they are treated. These docs think we are all drugheads. Thankfully I get my med from my reg doc who will not force me into only seeing these a**holes. One of them totally insulted me on a 1st visit I told him I was going directly to pres of hospital. I did just that on the spot and I know this doc got yanked in by the prez and was told never talk like that again to any patient or get fired. I wanted to grab this doc by his necktie when it happened but I of course did not. These pain docs are the very worst people with pain can go to....they are biased against most of us and and some act like are a God to you. I do not, will not take any of their crap again and never let them talk down to any of you. We deserve to be treated with fairness!

Re: Holly (# 70) Expand Referenced Message

How can someone become addicted to Oxicontin if it's time release. I am on oxicodone which I understand how easy it is become addicted. I also on Oxicontin but that is like taking aspirin. My tolerance is extremely high. Been on opiates for 50 yrs due to chronic pain. Is it normal to feel effects of Oxicontin?

Short-acting medicine for oxycontin is oxycodone. It comes in many milligrams.

Can anyone tell me if Oxycontin only comes time release?

When in doubt, and your doctor knows nothing really about it, because he only recites what the Pharmaceutical Representative tells him in maybe twenty minutes and then tells him he will be rewarded by writing out scripts. You call your Pharmacist and ask him what you need to know. Then Google the name and more information will be given; and lastly go to the website of the manufacturer and ask them. Then you will well informed. Good luck.

Re: CHAD from Kentucky (# 57) Expand Referenced Message

Chad, Thank you so much for sharing your story. I read some negative things about it and then I saw your story. It helped me feel better about switching over to Xtanza ER from oxy OP's 80 mg twice aday to 80mg Xtanza twice aday (actually 72mg) but you know what I mean. I too have been dealing with severe back pain after my lower back surgery. After hearing your story, I have nothing to complain about at all! You are a brave person and so awesome for taking the time to share this. Thank you Chad and keep up the Great Positive Attitude that clearly comes through in your message. You are an Amazing couragous survivor that most people probably could not survive from but you have! God Bless you Chad, stay strong like you obviously are! Because of you, I will go into this switch tommorrow evening and stay positive and give it a chance! Thank you so much. One last thing. "Fist bump to you while saying, "YOU ARE THE MAN CHAD"!
