Dilaudid Doesn't Work For Pain (Page 4) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am allergic to Vicodin and Percocet so for my last 2 surgical procedures have been prescribed 4mg oral Dilaudid. I understand that it is a very powerful pain reliever but I get minimal relief from it so is it possible that my pain receptors are not responsive to this type of medication? The only other pain med that I take is Lodine (NSAID) for arthritis. It seems that I get more pain relieve from 2 Tylenol but am still in alot of pain with that. Both times after surgery I have stopped taking the Dilaudid after 3 days because I'm still in pain and on top of that constipated. Has anyone had this same minimal response and any suggestions on other pain meds I could use if needed?

I had pain like that at one time they could never figure it out ER dept thought i was just looking for pain meds said it was in my head. They did all kinds of tests found nothing, finally they opened me up to look i had adhesions that had grown on ovary and tubes pulling then everytime i moved and the tubes were twisted they even commented they did not see how i got pregant the 2 times. They were able to save tubes and ovary they cut adhesions away and straightened out the twisted tubes. Something to think about as x-rays nor ultra sound or mri showed that they only seen it by surgery.

I also never received any pain relief from Dilaudid, however what I did receive was severe nausea & vomiting! Morphine IV in the correct dose is much more effective. Funny thing is that vicodin and/or percocet by mouth has always been effective for post-op pain after the initial self administered dose by IV pump usually for no more that 24hrs.after major abdominal with reconstructive surgery.

Yes I had my tailbone removed back in October and was in excruciating pain , the Dilaudid did nothing for my pain relief , getting up to just use the bathroom was so horrible I thought I would pass out , my body just did not respond to it , I was given Tramadol instead which help at least take the edge off.

You may ask you Dr for Morphine or diluadid suppositories or even the liquid for called Roxanol. I found that it's just a different mode of transport and worked more like the IV does for us not the pill form.

Didaudid to two hours to work for me. They gave me something to help it work. They said it was an anti-inflammatory that helped the dilaudid to work.

I guess this was the same thing I was given at an earlier time of the same condition, same unreal pain. But the first time they gave me the anti inflammatory they gave it finally after I had gone through the pain for maybe two hours like before. It worked immediately. I was out of pain within a few minutes.

System lost the first part of this question. I had unreal pain twice. the first time they gave an anti-imflammatory after all the pain and it worked quickly. The second time they gave it along with the dilaudid. Both times the dilaudid took two hours to work both times.

This is a simple way to ask a question.

Isn't there a medication that anybody knows that would work more quickly to relieve such obviously unbearable pain.

Just asking. Maybe I was given the best they had at the time ?

Steve,
There is a wide variety of fast acting IV,IM,or SC route narcotics given for short term severe pain relief.Fentanyl and Morphine Sulfate are outstanding when used for the very SHORT TERM RELIEF OF SURGICAL OR TRAUMA RELATED PAIN.It sounds as if they prescribed Toradol to you last time before the dilaudid was given. There are far to many medications to list by name or protocol so it's always best to find a skilled prescriber familiar with modern pain management practices . . Best of luck to you.
Regards,
Kenie.

Thank you so much for answering. What is wrong with these people then? My sister said this was the most pain she had ever seen anybody in and she went through natural childbirth and a tooth abscess she said was worse.

Why wouldn't they give me something decent?? I was writhing with the pain. I mean it was so obvious and if I told you where it was you would understand more. It was in my left testicle and then my right at the beginning of this month.

This makes no sense to me. I'm talking an emergency room. Both times.

I have to agree 2mg of dilaudid is totally useless for some one that has chronic back pain my doctor use to give me 4mg how ever change it to 2mg and of course I live in constant pain. I am now having extreme pain in my left shoulder and arm. what can I do.

See a gastroenterologist and check your gallbladder function. If you have sludge or stones in your gallbladder ask your doctor to remove it. You will feel 100 times better after recovery.

I was prescribed Dilaudid 2 months ago for my chronic severe neuropathy pain. Not only am I experiencing the same side effects you are, it takes at least 2 hours for a to start to work I don't itch like I normally do if I take pain medicine. The problem is whether it's a very powerful painkiller like everybody keeps telling me or not it's not working for me my physician is told me there is no other options that is the strongest pain medicine possible. I have been on gabapentin Lyrica and a ton of other medications I don't know what to do next.

If you are tired of hydromorphone please try 10 mg of oxymorphone. I think you might like it. Ask your Dr about this drug and see what he has to say about it. It is stronger than dilaudid and it will start working in about 20 min.

Well, this post is over 6 months old, but in case someone does want more information on the Fentanyl that Ange mentioned....

It is a very powerful narcotic pain medication, sold in a patch that you were for 48 to 72 hours.

It can cause side effects such as nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation and dry mouth.

More information here:

https://rxchat.com/wiki/Fentanyl/

Does anyone have any questions?

I am very sorry to hear what you are going through.

Dilaudid is a narcotic pain reliever that contains the active ingredient Hydromorphone.

The constipation is a normal side effect to narcotic pain medications, along with nausea, drowsiness and dry mouth.

That said, Vicodin and Lortab both contain Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone, so if the Vicodin did not work, it is improbable that better results will be had from using the same thing, just sold under a different name.

this site is not medical professionals, so we cannot tell you what you should use.

However, there are many other pain medications on the market, such as Oxycodone, Morphine, Oxymorphone and etc.

Have you tried asking your doctor to let you try something else?

If you are raking a generic form of the actual drug Hydromorophone other than actual name brand Dilaudid ,then most likely that is why .Nothing but the real Dilaudid works .I have had two pain manager tell me that .The reason the pharmacies push the generic form of Dilaudid is because they get paid way more $$$$$ verses than them selling the actual name brand .Anyway ,I can tell you that any thing other than actual name brand is crap Were you taking generic form of Dilaudid if you were then that is why ,it did not work .Now a Dilaudid I.V will make your pain go away to the point to where you litteraly feel none ,as if you can fly .You will be feeling sooooo good on a drip that ,you want even remember you eve had pain in the first place ,but that is real Dilaudid I.V not that Generic s*** .Unfortunately the only way to get this is in a Hospital under certain circumstances . I was in a 110 mph motor vehicle accident that should have killed me on impact .I have under gone multiple operations and coded .I had code blue called on me after my 2nd operation ,when I went into full on cardiac respiratory failure .I was put on Life support and taken to the Critical l Care Unit ,where I was expected to pass away that night ,as my wreck should have killed me .My family was told I should have been DOA .God has been extremely merciful ,graceful and very ..good to me Anyway ,all forms of generic Dilaudid ,are crap ,.Always ask for name brand and if you still hurt then your body just doesn't react to it .,like most .Your Chemical make up .metabolism break down is different ,every ones is .I have a friend who ,can take 30 mg oxycodone ,we are both on it .but ,I still hurt ,after two of them and 2 15 mg er morphine pills ,but I have 7 years on her .She has been on for 7 .I have been on pain management now going on 14 years ,so I have double the tolerance ,that she does .When you have been on Opiate pain relievers as long as I have after awhile ,your body builds up a very hig tolerance .25mg fentanyl patch does not faze me In fact ,I am in a lot of pain right now and I have two 30 mg Oxycodones two 15 mg morphine ER in me .yet ,I still hurt .I took three suboxones once and felt nothing ,1/4 of one makes most puke ,because they are 10 times the strength of a high dose of morphine ,they're actual form of morphine .However ,the other night I took a pice of one ,and I was feeling soooo good ..Strange ,how ,one time ,3 was a waste of my $$$$ ,then a few months later I take ,just a piece of one ,and place it under my tongue allow it to dissolve and about 30 minutes later ,I was feeling really great .I felt soooo good ,that I slept half the next day ,as I had no place to be .. I am now trying to find a pain manager .I live in Lakeland ,Fl .If any one can help ,if you know of a really good one ,please let me know .I am in dire need of a new pain manager who will listen ,be compassionate and understanding
